He doesn't move the needle for me at all. The epitome of a bland, competent play-by-play man. He is still light years better than Hawk.

I've noticed Len shows more of a personality on his SCORE hits. But on Cubs broadcasts he's more reserved. Scared to show himself as much.

I don't know why he's different in these two roles.

Agreed.. I think its more of having been saddled with that pud JD . the guy doesn't stfu and it's one awful joke after the next . very teinowitzian.

I actually like JD. I don't think that's the reason. In fact, JD tries to be funny and Len refuses to play off him.

I don't watch Cubs games often, but when I do, I'm amazed at the amount of dead air on those telecasts. While a little on the vanilla side, Kasper is a competent play-by-play guy, but JD is just pointless. I think they can do better.

Consider that Len got the job because Chip Caray was too much of a free-thinking firebrand and there's your answer.

I disagree on JD. The guy has a dry sense of humor. He's got some good one liners. And he's into the metrics shit while being an older guy.

The rumor is they're gonna dump JD for Ryan Dempster next year. Careful what you wish for. Dempster is a guy that thinks he's funny, when he's not. And it's not a dry sense of humor. Dempster forces the bad jokes.

I hated Len at first. Dry, boring, always playing it safe.

But now I kind of get it. His quiet low-key style really caters to the hazy-lazy-hot-summer-day-in-the-countryside Midwest region as a whole, and I think it's a nice contrast to the obnoxious environment at Wrigley Field.

I dont care for Len but I get it.

***

I hated Chip. I like an opinionated passionate broadcaster. But the problem with him was he just talked to much. Babbled too much. Explained everything in too much detail, and always spoke in circles. I mean if youre gonna be all over the place at least be funny (like Harry), but Chip, for all his babbling, was just as dry and boring as Len.

I hated JD at first. He wasnt what I would call a homer, but in 2015-2016 he always acted like everything the Cubs did was right, and every call should go their way (which it did), and acted too modern for an older guy.

The last couple years though, he's been more human, funny one-liners, more balanced, more personable. Little more folksy you might say.

Len as a score baseball expert is comical. Saber metrics, and the team is in goods hands for 10 minutes. Great announcer though.

Len and JD are both good. I liked Brenly and was disappointed to see him leave, but JD has grown on me and he and Len are like an old pair of comfortable shoes. I don't want some over-the-top funny man. And anyone who says they don't know baseball is crazy.

Ding ding ding!

Len has turned into even more of a homer than Chip ever was.

Len is not a homer. Homers are over the top personalities. Len isn't.

He was talkin about how Len is a play-it-safe non-controversial guy. This is what I said in the beginning. THIS is what u shoulda "DING DING DING"'ed at.

Even Curious Hair was miffed at ur dumbfuckin' DING DING DING.

Hi Timmy, your question and answer actually make me feel like I'm doing my job. My intention is to not excite you but rather inform, entertain, be a comfortable daily voice along with JD. The game is the thing, don't get in the way. Have fun and keep it light. My hero Ernie Harwell long ago said people would come up to him and say, "I fell asleep listening you last night!" and he always took it as a compliment that his delivery was soothing & not dissonant or annoying. So thank you!

If it's good enough for Ernie that people fall asleep, it's good enough for Len. I just hope the broadcast channels agree.

Some of my favorite all time baseball announcers use(d) Len's format. Vin Scully, Vince & Lou, Steve Stone, Dick Enberg.

Good on you mate.
My beef with chip was how he just screamed bloody murder at every foul ball. And he was in such a hurry to make an exciting call he screwed up a lot. Line drive base hit! Caught out there. The throw to the plate off target and in time!
