Cubs sent a pretty strong message about what they want from the broadcast team when they launched Stone for calling out some of the players. Len and JD put on a competent modern MLB broadcast, but are careful not to be critical of anything or anyone which makes for a sleepy broadcast. Cannot have the sound turned up when watching them at night because they put everyone to sleep. Benetti and Stone are already put on a far superior broadcast even though they are forced to broadcast some pretty awful baseball.

Jason Benetti might already be the best of the four TV play-by-play guys in Chicago. TV+radio, it's hard to say, because you have Pat Hughes and John Wiedeman in there.

Also Timmy, I tend to not overdo my calls so when something TRULY astounding happens, you trust me. If everything is always on 10, you have no place to go as a play-by-play announcer. A 1st inning RBI single isn't the same as a game-ending home run. Nuance is the word. I hope you can appreciate it. If not, zero worries. I'm just explaining how I go about it. I also put a lot of trust and faith in people watching that I don't need to beat them over the head with hyperbole in either direction.

All due respect, this couldn't be more wrong. I've been here 15 years and NOT ONCE have I ever been told a word about how to do it (or even a hint about it). JD is as critical as any local announcer out there. You just have to actually listen to what he says. He sugarcoats nothing but does it in a way that doesn't embarrass or bury people. He is incredibly skilled at it.

Benetti's performance with Walton proving why Len is deadly dull. Sorry Len, you are a nice guy based on what I hear from people who have worked with you behind the scenes, but your broadcasts are BORING!

Len, you are a good guy and a GOOD announcer, there are many out their that are not as good as you, I was just spoiled with Harry.

I will always enjoy your 2007 call of the walk off HR by Aramis Ramirez against the Brew Crew. That was perfect

I did laugh when he was talkin' about Craig Lefferts last year going multiple innings in the 80s, and said pitchers were a tougher breed back then. So is this to be interpreted as a dig against modern relievers/specialists?
