 Yeah, I rationally hate Billy Beane. I was told 5 years ago that everybody has caught up to him. ehh, not so much.

I hate that the one guy put Greg Oden on his team. If you want to go down that path then you might as well throw Len Bias, Benn Wilson and Bobby Hurley on the same Mt. Rushmore.

Yeah, hurt/dead guys probably shouldn't count.

If we're eliminating the hurt, the dead, and outright busts, then the exercise is basically to find guys who were extremely hyped and then settled into being respectable but not quite as advertised, right? That might be Bryce Harper.

Honestly...fuck the injury excuse.

Eric Daze has to be on the Mount Rushmore of this.

that makes no sense. Thread is titled "guys who should've been better".

Eric Daze had 6 back surgeries. I'd say he definitely played up to the level he should've played at for a guy with 6 spine surgeries.

Guys who should've been better are guys who had all the health and opportunity to succeed, but didn't.

I think outright busts are eligible.

But that's too easy: for the Blackhawks, you can say Kyle Beach, who was the one guy in the first round of his draft class who couldn't dress for a single NHL game (or if he did, it was many years down the line). I'm more interested in guys like, say, Jason Bay or Jay Bruce, who were talked up as superstars in the making but didn't quite get there.

EDIT: Beach wasn't the only first-rounder not to make the NHL, just the highest at #11. I forgot that was the year the Atlanta Thrashers used a first-round pick on a guy out of Junior B. Can't believe they're not in business anymore.

I don't know if you would consider chess a sport (or if this even applies) but Paul Morphy and Bobby Fischer both quit playing competitive chess at a relatively young age, leaving Koufaxian like peaks.

Isn't competitive chess really a young adult's game, like mathematics?

Generally, but there are exceptions. Steinitz was world champion at 58. Lasker was world champion from 25-52. Kasparov held the #1 ELO rating into his 40's.

Morphy quit at 22, Fisher at 29. I think they both had mental health issues...

I'll see your Richardson and raise you a Ryan Leaf. It turns my stomach that that clown now is drawing a check as an analyst for ESPN.

I don't think Beach is a good example. He was just a poorly evaluated prospect. When he got to the NHL he never looked the part. There were no flashes or glimpses of the prospect people predicted. He was a bum from day 1.

I'm thinking of guys who showed a flash of what they could become, but then never got there or even went the other way and regressed. A better example for hockey would be Pat Falloon. #2 overall pick, 25 goals as a rookie and then completely fell off the face of the Earth. Much better choice than Beach.

Alexi Kovalev is probably an even better example. 3x per game he would do something that no one else in the world could pull off. And then he would disappear for the rest of the game. Rinse and repeat for his entire career. On talent alone, Kovalev might be one of the top 10 players to ever play the game. He might also be the only person in that top 10 who isn't in the Hall of Fame. Textbook definition of a guy who should've been better.
