No more than 2 years left before it's gone. 2020 likely the last season of racing there. Not a big shock, but nearly official now.

It really is sad to see the end of once incredibly popular sports to disappear. Boxing, horse racing, and baseball had nice long runs but nothing lasts forever.

Yep. And now quarterbacks are retiring like Triple Crown winners.

Only the weak ones. The strong ones are playing until 50 now.

Beat me to this one:

Quote:
The Louisville, Ky.-based casino and racetrack owner, which bought Arlington in 2000 and also owns a majority interest in Rivers Casino in Des Plaines, said Wednesday it plans to apply for a sports betting license for the racetrack under Illinois’ new gambling expansion law. But the requirement that Arlington would have to pay additional taxes on gaming revenues to fund horse racing purses makes a casino there "financially untenable,” CEO Bill Carstanjen said in a news release.

“Arlington would enter this market with an effective tax rate that would be approximately 17.5% - 20% higher than the existing Chicagoland casinos due to contributions to the Thoroughbred purse account,” Carstanjen said. "It is with a heavy heart that we conclude that we can’t make this work.”

Seems too important to let it close altogether. Hope someone can save it.

The way the legislation was written made it inevitable. I'm sure that wasn't the intention, but in a state so desperate for cash taking care of racing interests was a minor concern. And legislators don't understand all the ins and outs. Also, Dave McCaffrey is completely overmatched vs. CDI.

I'm amazed at the number of people with whom I interact that would disagree with your statements about baseball. Baseball's revenue might be historically high, but it does not occupy the place in our culture that it did as recently as the 80's. Football was something people used to use to get through the baseball off season. Now, it's the other way around.

Rozner’s not going to like this. He is one of the idiots that believes slots should save horse racing. If horse racing can’t stand on its own, then it should die. No reason to put slot profits to prop up horse racing.

That plot of land would look great with Pulte homes on it.

I think the issue was that other tracks, such as those in Arkansas and Indiana (that were not nearly as nice as Arlington), had much larger racing purses solely because they also had casinos/slots, so it was more to try to level the playing field and keep the better horses here.

That's too bad, My nephew worked there this summer.

You'd think that land would be valuable, but how many years did that empty Sheraton hotel sit there before they demolished it?

The Sheraton building is still there. It's condos or apartments now. I'm guessing the property will be developed similar to The Glen.

It's a little more complicated than that.

When they put poker rooms in the Florida dog tracks revenue at the dog windows plummeted--while the tracks cleaned up on the poker rooms. Dog track owners probably happy Florida's banned dog racing, as they no longer have to subsidy the pretense of hosting parimutuel wagering in order to have a poker room. Although Disney's working with the Seminoles to shut down those too.

Pretty soon there won't be any jai alai courts left, either.

Surprised it's held on as long as it has. Seems like there's a major betting/fixing scandal every few years involving the top players. But then NBA games still take major betting action, and NBA's the most rigged sport this side of WWE.

Of course. The difference though, is that dog racing has no benefits as an agribusiness. It doesn't support the number of jobs that horse racing does nor does it preserve large green spaces.

There are several phony horse racing facilities in Florida that do the bare minimum to stay eligible for their card rooms, i.e. they race the minimum amount of races using the same small group of horses in two horse fields. No one bets on them.

Jai alai will not disappear because it's cheap enough to run in a basement fronton to maintain casino eligibility. That's what is happening at Pompano.

The intention of the Illinois bill is clearly to keep AP open, but that's really an ancillary concern. And the horsemen lack clout/lobbying power. Plus they're stupid and short-sighted. It doesn't take much for Bill Carstanjen to outwit them.

Hopefully, the gaming board enforces the bill's intent and does not license CDI for sports betting or a Waukegan casino unless AP is open. But I doubt that will happen.

Who the hell would bet that shit? I did like the frontons though. Old Florida is fading fast. I'm glad I got to Chalet Suzanne one last time. At least Mai-Kai still exists.

As one of the few on this board that has actually been a racetrack, I can more accurately express feelings of sadness as AP and I essentially shared the same metaphorical foxhole. From one racetrack to another, RIP.
