Some of the things listed are accurate. Rizzo is probably on the back 9 of his career now and physical problems with his back may become more and more of an issue.
Heyward was a bad signing and I said it BEFORE he was signed. He was having a pretty solid season, before Maddon put him in the leadoff spot. But Joe just couldn't leave well enough alone.
Bryant has proven to be a bit of a china doll. interested to see if his knee requires surgery after the season. I doubt he will be the 40 plus homers a year guy I thought he might be. The RBI numbers are even more disappointing. May well be traded if Boras doesn't want to have him sign an extension.
Strop is probably done with the Cubs after this season.
I want Chatwood in the rotation in 2020. He has some of the best stuff on the team and is signed for next year.
Baez is streaky but carries the team as much as anyone and just needs more di scipline at the plate.
Schwarber is coming around and I still see lots of upside.
I was probably wrong about Almora. he may not be an everyday player, despite his great defense and might be better off on another team and part of a trade package. I still can't stand Haap. He is a lousy defender and a strikeout machine.
Bringing Castellanos back would be a very good idea.
Contreras and Caratini comprise the best catching tandem in baseball.

Some horrible thoughts in the initial post.

Almora is Henry Cotto. It was worth a chance to bring him along slowly to see if he could hit righties consistently, but he should be on the short side of a platoon, a pinch hitter against LOOGYs, and either Schwarber or Castellanos' defensive caddy. Note that Henry Cotto played in MLB for a decade.

What the fuck is bad about Benito Santiago? He was a viable starter into his late 30s. Caratini is fine for what he is, he has been instrumental in straightening out Darvish, and he seems more durable than Contreras. He is fine to start Darvish's starts and day games after night games at catcher, be the primary catcher when Contreras is inevitably hurt, and give Rizzo an increasing number of days off against tough lefties as Rizzo ages.

Beane certainly didn't win the Russell trade. But he may have realized that Russell was too stupid to make the adjustments needed to be a star.

Lester should only be considered a #3 starter right now and a #4 starter next year. Everybody except the original poster understood that when he was signed.

Rizzo's #1 comp at Baseball Reference is Kent Hrbek. Feels right. He's an above average player about to hit his decline, he has a team friendly contract because he valued early financial security after surviving his cancer treatments, and the team options for his age 32 and 33 seasons protect the Cubs in case he has a devastating knee or back injury. They probably shouldn't re-sign him after that unless the NL gets the DH. Hrbeck retired after his age 34 season, and his last two years were middling.

I know that it's fashionable to hate on Addison Russell, not only for his misdeeds off the field, but a couple of underwhelming seasons on it as well. But I have seen signs that he may be a player worth keeping around. Of all those on the roster, I think he may have the most upside of the candidates that can play 2nd base. Both offensively and defensively. He seems more focused and confident lately and I like what I am seeing more and more. Might be a player after all.

He is barely better than Kemp as a hitter. He has more value because he can backup Baez at SS and nobody else on the 40 man can. But I don't think I would tender him.

I think this is his first arbitration year. It starts to get a little expensive. I imagine you will have to throw down 4-5 million for him in arb. I doubt he could make that on the open market.

Lets see how things go this last month. I think he is on track lately. He just needs to play every day and I think he will show he is worth keeping around. Zobrist will be gone. No way I would keep Kemp.....can't steal 1st base and Garcia is not a good option since they stopped throwing him fastballs.

I stopped reading the list half way through. Not because it was bad but because I didn’t need to keep reading in order to support the spirit of this list, despite my unwillingness to do so.

The thing I keep coming back to with this roster, and the payroll that holds it together, is that I don’t see much of a foundation to truly build on....and that is something I thought was a certainty up until midway of last year.

Bryant won’t resign because the Cubs won’t pay him what he and Boras want.

Javy is the teams MVP but very flawed offensively and much too streaky to be a true 3-4 hitter. Also, you really wanna give him 250-300M for 8-10 years? I don’t.

Rizzo? Love him. But...there’s surely cheaper power out there at the 1B position.
Hard decisions ahead as it pertains to Tony and those listed above....

Darvish....we’ll have him for the rest of his career but will he pitch 170 innings per year? He’s only done it twice since 2013 and ain’t gettin any younger.

Contrearas? Health, health, health...

Hendricks...he’s a number 3.

————————————————————————————————————————————-

Everyone else has either not developed, his old, or waaaay overpaid, which means internal development is critical going forward and needless to say the FO is on somewhat of a cold streak.
