Looking at his 8 films, I think you can pretty rank them in chronological order. I would move Django ahead of Inglorious Bastards I guess, but other than that I'd rank them...

Dogs
Pulp
Jackie
Kill Bill
Kill Bill (don't remember which one was better)
Django
Bastards
Hateful (don't remember if this was good or bad)

That's how I would rank them but I wouldn't have a problem with Dogs, Pulp and Jackie appearing in any order you prefer in the top 3.

Why does everyone forget his best film ever, True Romance.

He wrote the script for TR but sold it, couldn't find any investors.

No, your straight up favorite 5 movies. But since we are in this thread, I would say that "Inglorious Basterds" was a movie by someone who was absolutely on top of his game. It is far and away my favorite, followed by "Resovoir Dogs."

Did you guys ever see "Four Rooms?" It's kind of a concept movie, featuring four vignettes, loosely tied together by taking place in the same hotel on the same night, and Tim Roth as the bellman in all of them. Each vignette is a different director. I think QT is one of them, and Roberto Rodriguez. Saw it a million years ago.

Yeah that's a good movie actually with the exception of the coven storyline.
I think Tarantino did the finger for the car story but I could be wrong.

Way too hard to narrow it down to top 5, there are movies like French Connection, Apocolypto, Fargo, state of grace, Goodfellas, L.A. confidential, godfather 1,2.. Brave heart, tombstone, scarface, jackie brown, the hustler, true romance. Gladiator.. And thats not even counting comedies.

I know he only did the screenplay, but I loved From Dusk Till Dawn.

this film definitely goes the scenic route. there are whole lengths of the film of literally driving around. it takes its time. meanwhile, the film is jam packed with Hollywood. there are whole scenes that are "scenes" within filming a TV show or movie, there are a lot of sound bytes of radio and TV ads; and, like in any Tarantino movie, nearly wall-to-wall songs.

Pitt and DiCaprio have great chemistry. it seems like they became best friends just to do this movie. they work extremely well with each other and it helps pull you through some of the dryer spots of the film.

the sideplot of the Manson family, including a detour into the really eerie Spahn Ranch, was peppered with just enough intrigue not to overwhelm anything but not overpowering. it doesn't ground it in reality, though; it's just as strange and even wispy at times. at one point, the girls stalk and move like pet zombies--and they disappear all at once, too, hiding in empty "sets" and spying like spiders.

then you have a glimpse into sharon tate's life, with her a budding star and going to see her own film so she can enjoy hearing audiences react to her performance and the film itself. she also dons huge glasses in the dark theater, to illustrate that she might seem to be flawless, but she does have a little handicap.

same with dicaprio's rick dalton, who has a slight stutter that only comes out when he's just naturally talking. he can hide it when he wants to, especially when working.

the whole atmosphere of the film revolves around the dreams of hollywood, and the promises of happy endings and comebacks. it doesn't go over the top with any of it, but i wouldn't call the film restrained either. i think it hits just the right notes.

there's the usual tarantino trademarks--interrupting a film to pause and narrate something. he's always stolen this trope from scorcese, but he has made it all his own.

i think this is up there with his better works but i wouldn't put it with "inglourious" or "pulp fiction". but if you're a fan of him it's definitely worth seeing.

:D :D :D out of :D :D :D :D

Well we just got the Bernstein review. Seems like he liked it, but I didn’t understand half of the words he used.

I love hollywood nostalgia. i went to hollywood for work about 10 years ago and the guy we met with was a big hollywood buff and took us on a tour and I was mesmerized by it. I love that stuff. We made a stop in San Diego for a conference at the Town and Country Resort and it basically felt like you were in a 60's hollywood studio setting.

So i'm looking forward to this movie.

Just took my wife to see this and I could not have been more disappointed.

I have eagerly anticipated and enjoyed every single previous Tarantino work (and I rank them below), but this movie, while having so, so much promise, failed wholeheartedly to deliver on anything it advertised.

The music, though period-perfect, never inspired. In 'Pulp Fiction', when Dick Dale's guitar trill blasted out into the theater, it made the hairs on your neck stand up. Heck, even the recent "Hateful 8" had amazing music that was extremely moving. This soundtrack never got me feeling that "Tarantino Feeling". Not once. Shit, the storyline and the mood-setting of the recent 'Bad Time at The El Royale" QT homage-movie was 10 times better than this (and this movie stole a fucking song from that movie that worked way better in the earlier film).

I loved the characters, really wanted them to DO SOMETHING, but nothing ever happened. An hour into it, my wife fell asleep. I looked at my watch like 4 or 5 times minimum, which has never happened before. To say this film slagged through the first 2 hours would be a gross understatement.

The Manson kids made no sense even being in this movie. Wasted.

What the fuck, Quentin? Seriously. What the fucking fuck?

2 out of four Red Apple Cigarettes.

My QT Rankings:

1. Kill Bill I
2. Pulp Fiction
3. Kill Bill II
4. Inglorious Basterds
5. True Romance
6. Hateful 8
7. Reservoir Dogs
8. Death Proof-Grindhouse
9. Django Unchained
10. Jackie Brown
11. Planet Terror-Grindhouse
12. Once Upon A Time In Hollywood

I stayed at the Town and Country! You nailed it, it's so Old California. They nickel-and-dime you every step of the way, though. Wouldn't even give us a second little bottle of shampoo.

I'd call this movie Tarantino American Graffiti.

The ending is totally unsatisfying.

I wouldn't say it sucks. It's good not great. It's probably the only QT movie I have left wishing he had included MORE gratuitous violence.

I don't understand why he refused to answer reporter questions about violence during the promotional tour. HE makes it a theme of the movie when the Manson acolyte suggests they kill all who put violence on the screen.

I haven't read a single review or critique of the film so as not to precondition myself when seeing it so here is my film student take. I apologize if I'm restating what others have written about the film:

This is a Western within a movie about the making of Westerns.

Brad Pitt is the white hat. The Mansons are the black hats (highlighted by the literal black hat Tex wears in his first scene and the black outfits they wear as killers). Dalton (and to a lesser degree the Polanski household) is the townspeople with problems that can only be solved by the magical outsider. Pitt isn't morally pure, like in the original Westerns. He is more like an Eastwood Pale Rider type hero. The scene at the ranch is a classic western first meeting of the white hat against the black hat. The scene at the home, while not classic, is the shootout at high noon. Then, at the end, the hero rides off into the sunset rejecting compensation for his efforts.

I think viewing the movie like this enhances the story. It is once again Tarantino telling a story within a story.

I enjoyed it as well. Good is good.

I think the story is so well nuanced in both deconstructing the western (and Hollywood more generally) while at the same time reconfirming the western's archetypes and truths. The movie has depth while also being shallow.

The film ending almost seems like the wishful dream of a young Tarantino. The hippies get knocked out and 60s Hollywood gets to live on.

Very nice review. I don't have the ability to think that deep. All I know is it was pretty entertaining and I walked out with the impression that Manson's family was nothing more than a pimple on a gnat's ass and that the way it went down in real life could have easily gone down the way Tarantino portrays it.
