I know you are more of a fan of the NBA summer league, but most teams don't look back in fondness on being a #1 seed and not making it out of the first weekend.

Teams who are now mid majors probably do.

"Illinois" "Summer League" "Second Round". You really are all over the place. To be expected from a guy that believed that Duke of the 70's was a national power and not the mid major crappy program that they actually happened to be.

Do you have any Duke from the 70's that you would like to discuss Brick. Oh yeah the Final Four of 78. 60-78 in conference play for the decade does not a successful program make. When however has that ever stopped you?

Why is it now simply about the 70s? The 70s weren't as good as the 60s or any decade after. No reason to argue about whatever time frame fits your agenda.

They still weren't a mid major.

I don't think anyone (besides you of course) would consider a team that happened to make the tournament a grand total of 4 times in 18 years to be high major either.   That really is some rollicking example of success right there now isn't it?

because the 70's is the period that directly pre-dates the Coach K i.e. "pay to play" era. You know my original point happened to relate to that. Or don't you?   Let the record show that Coach K took over in 1980. Dissenting opinion regarding the pre Coach K era only to wonder why we are talking about the Pre Coach K era.

The fact that you think success defines a mid major is enough to show how off base you are here.

Why not the 60s though?

But even with that said, since you said "directly pre-dates", Bill Foster in the 3 previous years to Coach K had a loss in the Championship and an Elite 8.

Because Coach K didn't take over in 1970. That's why.

You do realize that Duke made those Final Fours while College Basketball was still highly segregated don't you? Are you sure that you want to count those as part of "high major" success?

How much would you like to bet that St. Johns made it more during the same stretch? They didn't make it because they allowed fewer teams to make it.

This missed because they had a shitty mid major program. 60-78 during the decade of the 70's alone.

St. John's was an independent beating up on Colgate and Manhattan and building big records against bum teams while Duke had to take on North Carolina and Maryland and N.C. State.

Which just killed the notion that they were a high major program.

Playing in a power Conference doesn't determine whether you are a high major program or not.

Northwestern has never been anything more than a low to mid major program at best. Functioning as the Big Ten lap dog never was able to change that fact.

Getting back to her original point if you take half the number of McDonald All Americans and send them to HBCUs the entire landscape of College Basketball changes overnight. 50 of the top 100 players from each class and College Basketball as we know it changes forever.

The guys she is referencing are NBA regardless. Doesn't matter if they attend Duke or Famu. They are simply biding their time for 6 months and hanging around a college campus

None of your points address the point regarding Duke being a Mid Major program during the 1970's. Shocking that you would fail to counter this claim

Once again, the terms "mid-major" and "high-major" were not in use.

You can make up your own definitions but others probably won't accept them. Northwestern is a high major from a power conference. Period. If you say otherwise, you're wrong. /

High major programs don't make the tournament once in their entire history.

You don't know what you're talking about.

Look who can dish it out but not take it. The very definition of the word.

They attract money and attention to the predominantly white universities that showcase them, while HBCUs struggle. What would happen if they collectively decided to go to black schools?

As someone who has a mild rooting interest in college sports, I would welcome black kids choosing HBCU's over the same boring choices. It would increase the number of interesting games. However, I think it's easy to loose sight of the fact that we're talking about 18 year old kids here. We're currently asking them to sort out their own situations, and sort out their family's situation, now we're going to ask them to save these HBCU's as well? It would be cool if these kids were thinking like that on their own, but I don't think shaming them into making these choices is desirable.
