Did any of the old heads ever hear about Billy Harris?
Of course. Streetball legend from Dunbar. Played on a good team at N.I.U. I'm pretty sure he played in the ABA.
They used to say that he was better than Jordan and it wasn't close.
Wasn't "they" it was he that used to say he was better than Jordan. Every now and then a local newspaper would catch up with him and he'd spout off about he was better or Jordan before there was Jordan.
I never heard anyone else say it however
I was hearing older heads talk about him doing stuff that Mike did 10 or 15 years earlier. Maybe it was the entertainment or the wow factor of his game or his scoring ability. I was told that I should have seen him play though.
When I was coming of age playground basketball was still big. Avalon (the primary park I used to be at) had some of everyone come out and play.
His old Dunbar coach told a friend of mine that Billy Harris couldn't even touch Ronnie Lester. I figured that he'd know since he coached them both.
I played in Avalon a few times in high school and i also used to come up there and play on Sundays back in the late 90's after i graduated from college.
It along with Fernwood was probably the two top indoor runs on the South Side back in the day. Real solid although on most of those Sundays i'd often come in from partying the night before and wasn't worth much of shit.
They had a few ex pros (mostly overseas) though Donald Whiteside who played in the NBA would also be in there too.
So would our guy.
