Honestly I loved that they pretty much did exactly that in the Nolan Batman movie. They had no idea who he was. No idea what motivated him. That is somehow much more terrifying.

That's why Kefka, another joker figure, was such a good villain in the Final Fantasy games. He didn't have a tragic backstory that made him evil, he wasn't misunderstood, he was just a nihilist who liked destroying stuff. They didn't rip off the Joker with this, though, because FF6 predates Dark Knight by about 14 years, and the Joker backstory hadn't been rewritten yet.

It didn’t rip it off but The Joker character was revamped as exactly that kind of character in both “The Dark Knight” The comic which was in 1986 and the “Killing Joke” comic in 1988.

That was the basis of the joker for the movie series starting with the 1989 movie.

I thought Nicholson Joker went mad because he fell in a vat of acid or something. That'd make me mad.

The persona of the Joker as an anarchist madman I mean. They gave him that backstory for the 89 movie but in the other stories he’s just a psychopath.

This movie looks extremely heavy handed in my opinion, regardless of what that thin-skinned toddler said about it.
