I'm not going to make a case for my personal favorites like the Replacements, Mink DeVille, Velvet Underground, or the Minutemen. They didn't really sell records. But I think any realistic list of the greatest American Bands would have to include Creedence, the Eagles, and the Byrds.

Then Guns n' Roses, Talking Heads, and maybe REM belong up there.

Is there some assumption that this was a suicide? Wasn’t sure if anyone has heard anything on the cause. Never owned a Cars album but always enjoyed their music growing up in the 80s.

The only thing that I read which one might guess that was it was the day his house went on the market or was sold? Maybe he was down about the pending divorce stuff?

REM is trash.

I do not like Guns n Roses whatsoever, but I'll conceded that they were quite special and would think they at the very least deserve to be in the discussion for a place on a top 20 list.

CCR and the Eagles definitely belong. The Byrds are worthy of discussion as well.

Talking Heads would go down as the best American band if they had broken up after Stop Making Sense and closed the book with a run of only perfect albums. Alas, they limped along and made three crappy albums in the late '80s. I guess the best has to be the Grateful Dead in terms of being an institution like the Beatles or Zeppelin. Radio stations can't do programming features on Talking Heads.

Someone put Red Hot Chili Peppers ahead of the Cars, the fuck outta heeeeerrree

Quite possibly! Heartbeat City is loaded but that one gets overlooked.

Beach Boys are the best American band and it ain't close. Though my saying that is sorta undercut by the fact that I didn't include them in my initial list.

I can't remember what site I saw it on, but is estranged wife is the one that found him...she was staying at the house, he had some sort of medical procedure and he was recovering with her help...I guess the story is that she went to bring him some coffee and he didn't wake up.

Jimmy Johnson, the guitarist from the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section just died. I was watching an old interview with him and the bass player, David Hood. I didn't know those guys played on a lot of Seger records. They were talking about "Old Time Rock and Roll" and how they originally cut a demo for another guy and while they were laying down the track both of them looked at each other and mouthed, "Bob Seger!"

They tried to record it again with Seger and it didn't go so well. Then Seger tried to record it with the Silver Bullet Band and that sucked too. So they used the original demo.

As they were finishing the track some kid knocked on the door of the studio. The kid's family was on vacation and he made his dad stop at the studio. He asked what it would take for him to be a session player. Jimmy said normally he would have run him right off but he was in a weird mood that day so he told the kid to go get his guitar. He could really play and that's his solo on the record. The guy's name is Howie McDonald.

Yeah I read for years the Muscle Shoals guys did all Seger’s music on record.

The frontman for the Cars was found dead on Sept. 15 in his New York apartment by his estranged wife, Paulina Porizkova. He'd recently undergone an unnamed surgical procedure; she described his death as "unexpected and untimely," as he was expected to make a full recovery.

According to the Daily News, New York City's medical examiner has determined that the cause of death was hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Ocasek also suffered from pulmonary emphysema, which also contributed to his death.

I have no problem with anyone’s taste in music but calling REM trash is a decidedly bad take. They were very important in exposing the world to the indie music scene and did so for more than a decade without selling their souls. Like most bands they tailed off at the end but that doesn’t diminish their legacy as one of the most influential and successful bands of the 80’s/90’s.

I probably should have included the Replacements and Talking Heads.

I couldn't, in good conscience, include the Eagles and CCR. I hate those bands. I wrote and deleted GnR...

is Big Star the VU of alternative/power-pop? At least they seem to get name-checked/covered by every band on WHFS/89X/whatever Chicago's alternative radio station was back in the late 80's/90's.

I'd say so.

I never got into Third/Sister Lovers, though. "For You" is the only cut off that one that I really like. All the best stuff is on the first two.

WHFS shout out! Nice. By far the best radio station in the greater Baltimore/DC area.

Does seem unfair that they had both Ocasek and Benjamin Orr singing, but Orr died waaaaaay sooner. Orr sang my 3 favorite Cars songs, Let’s Go, Drive, and Bye Bye Love.
