First album should have opened with "Just What I Needed," that riff should have been the world's needle-drop introduction to the Cars, but the greatest hits album got it right. The saxophone + square wave outro on "All Mixed Up" is like salted caramel, the combination you never knew you needed. "Drive" and "Magic" are probably corny choices but they were old Loop chestnuts I loved in high school, what can I do?

I have no problem with anyone’s taste in music but calling REM trash is a decidedly bad take. They were very important in exposing the world to the indie music scene and did so for more than a decade without selling their souls. Like most bands they tailed off at the end but that doesn’t diminish their legacy as one of the most influential and successful bands of the 80’s/90’s.

"Best Imitation of Myself" should have opened the first Ben Folds Five album, but I know better than to expect a spirited discussion of Ben Folds Five.

I can't remember what site I saw it on, but is estranged wife is the one that found him...she was staying at the house, he had some sort of medical procedure and he was recovering with her help...I guess the story is that she went to bring him some coffee and he didn't wake up.

I think at the rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony Ocasek said something to the effect of “‘When we needed a real singer to sing our songs, Ben sang them “. I found that so touching .

I get persnickety about wasted opportunities for opening tracks on debut albums sometimes. Like, I can't believe "Reel Around The Fountain" opened the Smiths' debut when "This Charming Man" was right there. "Best Imitation of Myself" should have opened the first Ben Folds Five album, but I know better than to expect a spirited discussion of Ben Folds Five.

"Let the Good Times Roll" is a very serviceable debut album opening track/riff.

"Candy-O." Everything in that song is near perfect.

Well you know you need a quality singer you got to the Polish. Liberace, Bobby Vinton, Benjamin Orzechowski and of course Good Dolphin.

I like it as well but that song was pretty much ignored until Phoebe Cates permanently embedded it in every teen guys mind.

Jimmy Johnson, the guitarist from the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section just died. I was watching an old interview with him and the bass player, David Hood. I didn't know those guys played on a lot of Seger records. They were talking about "Old Time Rock and Roll" and how they originally cut a demo for another guy and while they were laying down the track both of them looked at each other and mouthed, "Bob Seger!"

They tried to record it again with Seger and it didn't go so well. Then Seger tried to record it with the Silver Bullet Band and that sucked too. So they used the original demo.

As they were finishing the track some kid knocked on the door of the studio. The kid's family was on vacation and he made his dad stop at the studio. He asked what it would take for him to be a session player. Jimmy said normally he would have run him right off but he was in a weird mood that day so he told the kid to go get his guitar. He could really play and that's his solo on the record. The guy's name is Howie McDonald.
