Dies at 75. A staple on "This Week", and she was always a welcome voice to hear for me.

It's hard to believe that she and Ric Ocasek were the same age; harder still to believe that they inhabited the same universe.

Not for everybody apparently.

It's too bad they never found her father's plane...would have been nice for her to have had closure.

I may not be comprehending your post. I hadn't watched in probably 15 years but she was a talented journalist. Fair and usually impartial. Gave Sam Donaldson the business now and again. Was almost a teacher for viewers at breaking down some of the political bs going on. It's cool if she rubbed you wrong. Given your general draw toward intellect it surprised me she is lucky to reach purgatory. Maybe I missed something about her.

"She liked people on both sides of the aisle and had friends on both sides of the aisle," Will told NPR. "If you don't like the game of politics, I don't see how you write about it well," he said. "She liked the game of politics and she understood that it was a game."

Quote:
Will said that although Washington is a "town of short leases," with people constantly coming and going, Roberts represented the permanent Washington, a kind of figure who was constant through decades of political change: "The Washington not often denounced by people who denounce Washington because they don't know it exists," Will said. "Cokie represented the durable, ongoing Washington that is a custodian of the manners of the city and the sociability of the city that makes it really function."

These are both really, really bad thoughts. It's not a game, and it's not about good manners. It's about the apportionment of suffering.

Not sure if CH is serious. Apportionment of suffering is a stifled retort. Breathe and give us clearer understanding.

It's certainly closer to that than it is to a game. Baseball is a game.

Politics is a game and reality TV all wrapped into one. Your favorite politician didn't ascend by not playing the game. You may find one of them locally but you won't find any on the national stage.

You already know this me thinks. The game involves composing oneself in a way that allows you to speak hellfire and brimstone to the constituency while still having the decorum to work with those you do not always agree. Maybe one could call it theatre instead. W_Z would probably come along and shit all over that, but hey. Neither the game nor the theatre are well done anymore. She did seem do possess the skill George described (I'll wait for Seacrest to verify :eye: ). Me thinks that was the point.

Nope. That was pure silliness. I am not into the daily grind of politics at all, so I was never too familiar with her.

Well, I think you're just being cranky. We know that he does not mean to be taken literally. What he means is debatable, but it is certainly not that politics is simply a game.

Heard Roberts on a program celebrating N'awlins and women in New Orleans or something like that. Cokie tells a story about how as a school-age kid (elementary school) she was being home-schooled or something non-traditional but really wanted to go to a proper school. So she rolled up to some private school and enrolls herself. The way Roberts tells the story, she was half-orphan Cokie and the headmistress or whomever took pity on her and didn't even charge her parents tuition!!!

Quote:
Born in New Orleans as Mary Martha Corinne Morrison Claiborne Boggs, she was given the nickname Cokie by her brother, Thomas, who had trouble pronouncing Corinne.

Roberts' father was Thomas Hale Boggs Sr., a former Democratic majority leader of the House who served in Congress for more than three decades before he disappeared on a campaign flight in Alaska in 1972. Her mother, Lindy Claiborne Boggs, took her husband's seat and served for 17 years. Lindy Boggs also served as U.S. ambassador to the Vatican.

Roberts split her time between Louisiana and Washington as a child and attended Wellesley College in Massachusetts. Her first job was at the Washington television station WRC-TV, where she hosted a public affairs program called Meeting of Minds.

She married journalist Steven V. Roberts in 1966.

I'm sure the head of the local private school in New Orleans had no clue who she was and comp'd her tuition as an act of charity.

The real question about this Cokie has not been asked or answered. Let's assume she was in her early twenties and was coming off a bender...could she shit 5 times in a day? Mmh mmh?

Cokie Roberts was a smug corporate centrist who amounted to nothing other than a stenographer to power. She balanced her lack of insight with a dearth of courage and a deficit of integrity. If the world truly were a meritocracy, her highest station in life would have been to serve as a dummy in a ventriloquist's act.

In addition to willingly serving as a tool of corporate domination, "credible" Cokie was also a self-admitted dupe of the U.S. war machine: "Look, I am, I will confess to you, a total sucker for the guys who stand up with all the ribbons and stuff and they say it's true and I'm ready to believe it." Thanks, Cokie, terrific.

He's saying that Cokie Roberts, as a well-entrenched member of D.C. high society (should journalists be well-entrenched members of high society, anyway?), was insulated from the stakes of politics and could treat it as spectacle. I disagree, but it's to be expected from George Will, who is part of the same insulated club.
