Sounds awesome. I have really missed going and playing at least one stellar course each year. I need to get back to that

Found this company in Ohio that will refinish irons and put a black coating on them. I keep these irons at my moms in Charlotte and play them once or twice a year max. Just curious what you guys thought. Keep them chrome with the chatter marks or send them in to get cleaned up and blacked out?

I have been browsing as the season winds down and making Christmas list wishes. Anyway there are a few stories/opinions about newer steel shafts for irons. The thinking is the newer steel alloys used are light enough to consider no longer using graphite for irons. This is especially true if you are using regular or stiff graphite now according to some.

They are obviously less expensive and depending on brand and model sometimes by a ton. Furthermore they go on to say the 3-4 are better to be hybrids (still graphite) than a 3-4 iron always and sometimes even for 5 (I so not believe this).

What say my fellow board duffers?

Ugie and Furious are the equipment junkies. Best to talk to them.

I haven't played a round in a month, and I think I've only played 3 or 4 times since July 4. Its been such a busy summer its crazy. Hoping I can get out maybe 5 more times before the weather turns bad.

 That's really just a small part of it, Mike. I played quite a bit in May and June. I think there has maybe been like two weekends this summer I was on Dad duty and couldn't golf. I had some family parties, a wedding, AJ's par-tee, and other shit that came up that has made the last few weeks sofa king busy its been nuts. Things are calming down now which is nice because the Holidays will be here before we know it.

Best way to determine shafts is likely to get fit so they can dial in your speed and other vitals. For a lot of people the hybrids are easier to get in the air and go further. I have invested heavily in 2,3 and 4 irons the last few years. I use them off the tee a lot and out of the fairway on occasion, not to mention they work as great punch out clubs. It’s a preference thing. I mentally have a hard time hitting a three Wood off the ground consistently and I sold my last club that was essentially a hybrid and went back to a blade style.

Steel.

You only want graphite in your irons if you have tendonitis in your wrists or elbows. There are so many different options now when it comes to steel irons.

Why lightweight steel, Mike?

Length, weight and bend profile are much more important factors than flex alone. IMO people focus on flex too much.

A "traditional" iron shaft like Dynamic Gold is in the 120-130 grams, depending on flex. A "traditional" lightweight shaft is around 80-95 grams, depending on flex.

There's a huge middle ground there and these days there are many options in the 105-115 range. If you have the dough to get properly fitted for your irons, do it. But don't focus on flex, be more concerned with length, weight and bend profile. Bend profile is how the club launches, based on how high or low you typically hit the ball.

I have a buddy who is roughly the same height as me. I recommended he go to a well-known reputable fitter. In his case, Miles of Golf in Michigan. They fitted him into irons that are 1.25" over standard and he instantly became a much better ball striker. All those years he was playing in ill-fitting clubs and now he's on the path to total consciousness.

Turf interaction is huge when it comes to irons. If you have a steep angle of attack you may want something with more bounce like PING vs. a shallow angle of angle of attack and going with an iron with less bounce like Mizuno.

Also, iron shafts tend to be ascending or descending weight. If you are going to drop the dough on new irons, you want to know what fits you best. I play better with heavier shafts in my wedges, so ascending weight is a better fit for me. PING has really nice stock shaft (made my Nippon) called the AWT 2.0 (Ascending Weight Technology) if that fits you.

They will fit you for lie angle as well.

There is no standard for flex, so don't get too caught up in what is stamped on the shaft. Every caveman golfer thinks they "need" stiff shafts. Maybe they do, maybe they don't - but ego tends to put people in stiff.

I cannot recommend the Nippon Modus Pro 105 shaft enough. Just an incredibly smooth feeling shaft. I heard it plays a tad soft to flex so you may be regular, stiff or somewhere in between. Somewhere in between involves hard-stepping or soft-stepping the shaft, but that's a lesson for another day.

The Modus 105 comes stock in quite a few irons.

Find a reputable fitter.

Thanks Styles, That is the information I really needed to go along with what I have been reading. I do plan a fitting whenever I do get something. As I said for now it is end of season research and keeping an eye on deals.

I simply have been caught up in the entire everything must be graphite way of thinking as it has been so long since I bought brand new irons. My last were Big Bertha 1996's. I still have them and they served me well with graphite but technology has leapt way up front.

By the way I have always used "standard" shafts whatever that meant for any manufacturer. I am way past having a "golf ego". I almost laughed at myself and thought I should cheat up and get senior but I am still too far away in age and much stronger now than probably 5 years ago.

Love the KBS product if that’s an option for you. I don’t have the technical knowledge Furious does but my goal is to have a low piercing trajectory and the KBS C-Taper 120 has been great for me.

Yeah if I get them put together custom. I golfed last weekend with a friend above my pay grade. He was using PXG clubs. Oh boy.

T-Bone mentioned piercing trajectory. From an aesthetic point if not using a fairway wood I simply love to see the ball fly high and far. Just makes me feel good. From a game point of view if my shot is good/correct it will stick well or roll just a bit. My bad shots rocket off the green etc.

Everyone loves high and far, Mike.

Are you a low-ball hitter, high-ball hitter or somewhere in between?

My guy T-Bone is a high-launch, high spin player (whether he knows it or not ).

If your 200 out, and the ball goes high and lands soft, or its a low bullet that carries 160ish and rolls for 40 yards, but both end up on the green, does it really matter Mike?

I can get out next weekend, but the hours between 10-2 are booked. Kinda makes playing golf tricky . But I am going to get out one way or another.

Hang on to my post above when you are ready to get fitted. I'm sure I've posted something similar a few times. Get fitted if you want to hit it high and far more consistently. It's pretty simple.

You're welcome.

Thanks again. I will get there. Golf is a life journey for me that wasn't very serious until kids were in high school. Don't let that scare you Frank.

I realize what I am but I fight it as much as I can. I play with a guy that swings 120 mph and hits it sky high. I used to be that guy but I prefer to hit more of a driving shot now. I don’t spin it as much in the air or on the green as I once did but I don’t care about that as much as I used to.

Is your scorecard better than his, TBone?

I've taken golf far less seriously this year. Cussing still happens MANY times, but the club throws and slams have been mitigated. Its supposed to be a fun game so I've been trying to treat it as such.

I'm giving serious though to getting fitted next year or the year after as well.

I am seeing more and more players on tour with graphite in their irons, it surprises me, but several are making the switch.

Mike isn't a tour player with a sponsorship deal and access to a tour van.

I didn't bring up high-end graphite shafts because I figured it would only cloud the issue.
