U rarely see an arena tour announced on such short notice (less than 2 months). I love it. Maynard wins again.

Reilly and The Assassination were terrific, as usual. I brought the BIL after we visited my niece in the picu at Loyola. We got there a little late. Chit chatted with the band after the show. Had a nice convo with Christian Stolte of Chicago Fire. Cool dude.

Head and the Heart was tonight. Surprised noone mentioned it. Was sold out. Saw it on the marquee today. Was stunned it was today. Thought it was gonna be in October.

Went Sunday and met up with Furious Styles and Bagels. I missed Harvard Dan.

Here are the bands I saw in hierarchical order:

1. Beaches- This is a great band and they played a fantastic set. Everything good rock and roll should be.

2. Gudied By Voices- Admittedly I am not a fan in the same way Bagels is, but I may have been converted somewhat. Pollard's quirks come off as lacking even a hint of self consciousness to the point where they are endearing. And there was no fucking around with obscurities. They played the kind of greatest "hits" set that is a appropriate for a festival. Good fuckin' rock show.

3. Skating Polly- Another band fronted by two chicks. They aren't as professional as Beaches but still rock pretty hard. The guitarist can really play.

4. B-52s- Good set. Just what you would expect. Played all the hits. Very fun.

5. Nick Lowe with Los Straitjackets- I didn't really like that they played "Cruel To Be Kind" and "Heart Of The City" at about half-tempo, but they were okay.

6. Patti Smith- I've seen her several times and she's been better every other time. But I'll give them credit, they're all pretty old. They still killed "Gloria", but there's something Boomerish about them that doesn't appeal to me and it's a lot more obvious than it was in the days when she was considered the punk priestess.

7. Bikini Kill- Kathleen Hanna is a pain in the ass.

8. Village People- They didn't sound good. But in good news for the SJW crowd, "The Indian" is now "The Native American".

9. Raconteurs- This is the worst of the worst. Just fucking dreadful. Every terrible rock cliche you could imagine. I felt like I had been transported to 1974. I think Jack White screamed "Chicago" more times than I've ever said the word in my life. The man can play his instrument, but the mindless and boring blues-based solos went on and on to a point where I considered them audience abuse. This was self-indulgent bullshit of the highest order. The horrifying end came when Jack asked the crowd to answer him back with "STEADY AS SHE GOES". What the fuck is this? Pat Travers circa 1980? OUT GO THE LIGHTS!

Morrissey at Ravinia on Saturday.
1) He actually showed and performed.
2) Knew only 5 songs from the set list. In fairness, his catalog is quite large.
3) He's 60 yrs old.....I think he sounded great.
4) How in the fuck do you leave "National Front Disco" off the set list?
5) Now does a cover of Wedding Bell Blues?

I'm glad I saw him. I don't know why I like Morrissey, but I do. He's weird, awkward...he entertains me.

Best way he was described to me years ago....
"How was the Morrissey concert?"
"Pretty good...yeah....I mean, you can only take someone crying into the microphone for so long, but it was a good show".

Yeah, Morrissey's catalog is extensive. I've seen him 4 times and there is always something left out that I want to hear. His band has been stellar when I've seen him.

Riot Fest was a good time. Saw GBV and B-52s w/Bagels and JORR. GBV were excellent, B-52s were really fun. Their long-time drummer Sterling Campbell (Bowie, Soul Asylum, etc.) was the highlight for me. Dude is the ultimate pop drummer. Just insanely good.

Caught Ween w/ Harvard Dan. We had a great time nerding out over drums and Ween.

Ween was outstanding and B-52s were fun. Our ride from Clybourn to show via his house disappeared. So we Pink lined it to Ogilve and waited. Buddy with me didn't have his charger with so phone dies before we get back to Crystal Lake where he realizes he didntvlwave his house/car/studio keys in my car but back in city at buddies home. Had to breAk through window of his home to get in. Last Halloween at Ween, my car got stolen at rallying point...its always something with us.

Whistler, have you seen any shows at Copernicus yet, in the last few years? Seems like they are drawing away some of the type of acts that would play at Rosemont Theatre (which is closing) or Park west (which is sold.)

Park West fucking blows. Worst venue in the city.

never. Passed by it recently and looks impressive from the outside though. Thought it would be some hole in the wall dump that was refurbished.

That was one of my neighborhood movie theaters when I was a kid. Other than some battle-of-the-bands shit years ago, I've never seen live music there. If the sound is good, they should continue to draw some mid-level acts. Lots of parking and walking distance from the el and metra. Close to the expressway, so as not to scare away the suburbanites.

It doesn't matter. It's a dump. The sound is dreadful. The layout is terrible. The bar is terrible. Everything about the place is just bad. I hope it's bulldozed to the ground.
