Read a long-form print article a few years back on the increased allocation of resources and commitment to football programs among the Little Ivies (NE private lib arts schools like Bowdoin, Bates, Colby, Williams, Amherst et al). This was like 2016-2017 maybe? At the height of the CTE hysteria that appears to have died down, despite the problem of concussions not going away. Cuz the hook of the article was "why are top-shelf academic colleges increasing their commitment to football at a time when amateur football appears to be endangered by concussion concerns?."

They've figured out even a mildly successful football team increases alumni engagement with the school. Football being in the Fall with the associated social activities (Homecoming, tailgating, etc) is better positioned than any other sport to lure alums back to campus. Increased alumni interest in on-campus activities leads to increased revenue from alumni donations. Something to do with parents balking at the high sticker-price of college + the need to offer generous fin-aid packages to compete for the best students who couldn't get into their first choice school putting pressure on schools to find other sources of revenue besides student fees.

Ignorant was the kindest thing I could say.
