They've figured out even a mildly successful football team increases alumni engagement with the school. Football being in the Fall with the associated social activities (Homecoming, tailgating, etc) is better positioned than any other sport to lure alums back to campus. Increased alumni interest in on-campus activities leads to increased revenue from alumni donations. Something to do with parents balking at the high sticker-price of college + the need to offer generous fin-aid packages to compete for the best students who couldn't get into their first choice school putting pressure on schools to find other sources of revenue besides student fees.

I'm sure that may be true, but I also think that such a focus on football can have an effect on a university's reputation. Take Northwestern, for example. The entire campus has been transformed in pursuit of football excellence. If I'm a smart kid who doesn't give a shit about football, maybe I choose to attend some small liberal arts school like Swarthmore or Earlham rather than going to a wannabutneverwillbe Ohio State.

And maybe Pat Ryan wasn't going to donate money for a library. But I think what's happened at NU does suggest a particular set of priorities that aren't necessarily congruent with academic excellence.
