which of these were worst?

1(The Heyward contract
2)The Darvish Contract
3)The Chatwood Contract
4)Signing Brandon Morrow who only pitched half a year
5)Trading Soler for 1 year of Wade Davis who the Cubs had no intention of re singing
6)Tradiing D.J. Lamheau for Ian Stewrat
7)Letting Hector Rondon go
8)Trading Jiminez for Quintana
9)Trading Torres for Chapman
10)Singing Kimbrall
11)not trading for verlander and kate upton

i never understood the darvish signing and even though he put in a decent year it was all for naught. a lot of the other moves didn't seem so bad at the time but now all of them look equivalent to betting bourban war to win a race.

Singing Kimbrall has to be right up there

I’d add not signing Verlander

4 and 6

Shitty drafting is the biggest problem. A lot of awful 1st round picks.

He had to sign him. Who the fuck else was going to close games ? Do you remember how terrible the bullpen was mid season ? He was the best option available . I figured he wasn’t going to be good but he was the best option available .

Yeah but if he didn't sign Morrow he would have likely already had some other closer.

The worst move was not getting verlander, that directly led to the Cease-Eloy for Quintana rape.
Second worst was DJ lemehieu then Heyward.

Not signing Verlander and signing Darvish. Quintana the Cubs needed, and he has pitched well in stretches. I don't understand why they didn't re-sign Davis. At this point in his career, you can't trust Darvish to win a game. He might strike out 12, but he'll still lose. (I can't believe JORR finally convinced me of the wins argument.)

A month earlier. Which means that the Cubs could have traded with Detroit.

Detroit wanted Schwarber, Theo wouldnt do it.. They traded For Q instead.. Huge mistake..they also gave up more for Q than what we could have gave up for Verlander.

Watching the unmitigated disaster that has been Kimbrel has been funny, but its not my favorite move.

My favorite is getting Eloy and Cease from Theo :D

Verlander was the worst, he even said Chicago was his number 1 choice, Detroit wanted ALmora, Happ, and 2 minor leaguers and Theo said "NO"

Lot of revisionist history on this one . Look there’s not a universe in which I’d ever take Q over Verlander BUT when they trade was made , wasn’t Verlander coming off injury , being bad, being expensive and his velocity being down ? Showing all signs power pitchers used to show as they started into regression .Now he’s Roger Clemens in the latter stages . All I’m saying is that now it looks terrible but at the time it wasn’t as egregious as it looks .

Rowan Wick maybe? I know he was unproven at the time, but so was Bobby Jenks back in 2005.

And if Wick shit the bed while Kimbrel went 20-22 for another contender WHY DIDNT HE SIGN KIMBREL!!! . I do agree that the Morrow deal was terrible at the start and someone who is supposed to know better and does analysis for a living like Theo should have seen that train wreck coming a mile away

1. Not signing Verlander.....nothing else is even close to this bad.
2. Soler for Wade Davis. This is a distant 2nd. Soler was a valuable trade piece and this was as big of a bust as could have been expected.
3. Darvish Contract
Chatwood contract wouldn't have happened if Darvish was anything close to his contract value. Yes he's getting better, but big money no results makes it complete shit signing.

And of course we can't assume Verlander would pitch as well for the Cubs as he has for Houston.

Probably better! (He wouldn't have to face a DH.)

Verlander's time in Houston is remarkable and I wonder if it has to do with coaching or something else (maybe the "Castellanos effect" after being with a shitty Tigers team). His strikeout numbers are actually way better than they were.

Yes we can. His resume was pretty decorated.

Outside of that...we know he would have pitched better than Quintana, Darvish, Chatwood. His credentials speak volumes.

In the year prior to Houston trading for him, Verlander led the AL in K's, so let's not act like he was kicking around the Mexican league with Jake Taylor.

Did anyone expect this resurgence, no, but the guy was a legit #2 starter at worst when the Astros traded for him.

I had hoped timmy might get the hint...alas, it was not to be.

Not signing Verlander is top of any list by a mile. It changes all other subsequent moves. As I've already stated...not signing Verlander directly cost the Cubs at least 2 WS appearances. It was that big of a fuckup.

very few of us didn't want Verlander. That's my recollection.

At this point I wonder if the final kebash was put on the Verlander deal by Ricketts. He got his WS then he put efforts into the neighborhood.
