My condolences...awful to hear this.

This is very sad to hear. My condolences to you and your family.

Sorry Badrogue, hate to hear that.

I come at this from the opposite angle. When my Lionel died last December, I didn't take him to urgent care. My guy was having seizures and I waited through the night so I could bring him to our vet instead. Years earlier my brother's dog died on the operating table at urgent care and I didn't want my dog to go through that, wanted to get him somewhere I trusted. My dog ended up dying in the parking lot at the vet's and to this day I am still consumed with guilt over if I could've done something differently that would've saved him. My vet said it wouldn't have made a difference and in the end I probably did save him a lot of needless suffering and anxiety, but here I am 9 months later and not a day goes by that I don't think about it several times and feel awful about that night.

That's tough shakes. The end result would have been the end result eventually. Maybe Lionel got another couple of weeks, or couple of days, but he was going down regardless. Maybe one of those seizure's caused brain damage and even if you "saved" him, he wouldn't have been the same. All you can do is handle the situation as best you can in the moment. It sucks, but I wouldn't blame yourself for what happened. You gave the guy the best life you could for MANY years. That's all any of us pet owners can do.

Doesn't feel like dog ownership was really a fit for the COF family budget.

Absolutely. Spoiler alert: if your pet is old to begin with, whatever you spend probably isn’t going to extend their life in any significant way. It sucks, but we’ve all seen it multiple times.

It's easy to say $800 is the limit until your living a situation that may require more. If your wife changes her mind or there are kids involved you'll spend a lot more than that.

It's for you or your wife and kids. You know that it may not make them live years or months but you're willing to pay to try to keep them around a little bit longer. Same reason why we pay ridiculous amounts to extend the lives of our human family.

An $800 limit on vet expenses?

You shouldn’t own a pet.

Ever.

Maybe a goldfish.

Spending $1000 on a 12 year old dog is different than spending $800 on a puppy with health issues. I would hope there is some common sense being used, and not just adding up receipts to see what the running total is.

Just like with people, there's a limit to what can be done and how much is too much.

Whatever money you're willing to spend on an animal, there's going to be someone with more money than you have that thinks you're poor of character for not spending more.

While this is true, $800 gives you basically no breathing room for anything remotely significant to go wrong.

If you live in IL, I can see how you have to decide between pet health and property tax payments.

I sympathize.
