My guess is Lester doesn't want to be the guy who ends their playoff hopes and pitches well tonight for one last time

It's over. The Cubs have to win out and the Brewers have to lose out to force a tie. Neither is likely to happen.

Lester could pitch 8 shutout innings, and the Cubs could still be eliminated if the Brewers win.

Playoff hopes ended when Kimbrel gave up the second of the back to back jobs last Saturday.

At this point I am hoping the Brewers keep winning and the Cubs can play spoiler and force the Cardinals into the wildcard game.

At this point, there is no reason for Rizzo, Bryant, Baez etc to play in a game until March. They're banged up and there are 4 games left. Sit them rather than risk further injury.
