Cubs fans thought they were going to be the new Red Sox.

It is weird the Sox fans are more upset than the actual Cubs fans.

It's the old expectations thing. When the expectation is WS and you don't even win the division for 2 consecutive years, then people get pissed.

Like many, I knew this team was destined to fail. They had the one stretch early in the season when they overcame their shit start, but after that streak, they've been mediocre.

The 4 game sweep by SL last week was a disgrace. Only Rizzo and Castellanos seemingly showed any heart and emotion. This is Chicago. Leave it out on the field. And this team isn't like that and partly to blame for that psyche is Maddon who always is Mr. Positive instead of Mr. Pragmatic or Mr. Get Pissed Off.

People stand by guys who give it there all, but many of these players just didn't perform when it mattered and many just didn't seem to really care (even though we know most if not all do). Clearly there needs to be a culture change. Guys like red ass John Lackey are needed. Even Ross would chew some ass and keep people in line. That is missing on this club.

What did Leo say? Nice guys finish last? Well in 2019 Chicago, with the 2nd highest seat cost in MLB, it's produce or get ripped and this team for 2 consecutive years did not produce at crunch time and they've been ripped and deservedly so...

The line was "nice guys, finished last," which has a completely different, not-necessarily-causal meaning.

remember that terrible start they had?

Funny how noone remembers it.

But take that 1-7 start, and the 0-9 lately, the Cubs are an 81-61 team between the start and end of the season.

Pretty good if you ask me.

I agree. We still have a hitting core to contend. The real problem is pitching. It's decayed to the point where noone is reliable anymore. The position players are still fine.

No one asked you or the idiot who said they had a good core.

They have no starting pitching, closer, lead off hitter, defense or contact hitters. Yeah, future looks bright!

EDIT: and no manager after they let Maddon go.

I'm certainly not giving up on the idea that this team and the core they have put together can win more than the 2016 crown. I hate that this year was wasted, as I believe that had Maddon been fired and Whit Merrifield traded for (as I called for last winter)and a closer signed, they could have contended. But they kept Maddon, rather than face the possible public backlash that firing him may have created and failed to get a leadoff hitter and a closer when they needed to. If they handle things correctly this off-season, they will be right back in the mix.

Didn't we just witness the best run in Cubs history? Aren't we still kind of in the midst of it? They're not going to strip it down to the studs, and they shouldn't. You've got the "core four." Trade at least one, and no more than two of that core, for major league talent and see what happens.
