Was working in a field and was sure I was going to get caught in a lovely lightning storm but we got lucky and it dissipated and broke apart. The front coming in did cool things down a bit which was nice.

Hope it stays that way. Going out tonight to see if there are any lightning bugs.

Second wave of storms blew through.. cooled down a lot. The lightening bugs have been good for the past week or so as long as the area you go buy isn’t underwater.

Didn't see many, damnit...I might go out west tomorrow night--went south tonight. So disappointing....I swear, two years ago I saw what must have been a million of them over a cornfield.

So it says its hot and humid with scattered showers. but you guys are saying these scattered showers are misleading because they sound like the deluge of biblical times.

I don't ever remember weather like that back when I was there. It would hardly rain in June. More like August you'd sometimes get that nice summer rain but it wasn't like everyday like it seems to be now.

It could be worse, a city in Mexico got covered in 3 feet of ice after a summer hail storm.

Yeah. It looked pretty ugly between Route 176 and Lake Cook Road.

from Bob Gardiner at Lake County Stormwater Mgmnt.

Well, the storms are approaching Rockford and heading this way although the leading clouds look like they’re already over Crystal Lake. The lower atmosphere is pretty dry here now so it will take a little while to saturate when the storms get here so we may not see rain at first. However, this is a chunk of tropical moisture and should have no problem providing the necessary water to saturate our atmosphere and provide plenty of rain to boot. Still looking at about 1-2” average rainfall but probably more under thunderstorms. The heaviest rain isn’t forecast until later this afternoon and evening. Currently looks like the heaviest rainfall will be more southerly with relatively little up in Wisconsin (but time will tell).

The storms are moving pretty fast so any one storm won’t stay over an area very long but we may see some training of storms where new storms keep passing over the same area. The SPC now has us in the “Slight” category for severe weather (up from “Marginal” yesterday) with the main threat being large hail (15%) and wind (5%). Chance of tornadoes is less than 2%.

Here is the Lake County SkyWarn forecast:
OUTLOOK FOR THE COUNTIES OF LAKE, SOUTHERN KENOSHA, EXTREME NORTHERN COOK AND EXTREME EAST MCHENRY

HAZARDS: PENDING

YESTERDAY'S RECAP: Another pleasant albeit cooler day with highs right around 70. Clouds came overnight with a few showers.Lows were in the upper 50's before rising to the low 60's by sunup

SHORT TERM ( 24 HOUR OUTLOOK) A rather rainy and stormy day ahead with a few morning showers and maybe more general rain later this morning into the early afternoon. Might see a short break until thing really get going later this afternoon and evening with t-storms and a potential for some heavy rain. With storms moving at 40-50 mph, don't see flooding being an issue other then in areas of heavier rain. With PW around 2.0, some storms could drop a quick 1/2" of rain in about 15 minutes. Another issue will be the threat of any severe storms. It appears the bulk of this will be to the SAW but can't rule out a renegade severe storm or two.Highs will be challenging with most area just getting above 70 despite e the gusty SW winds approaching 30 mph. Rain should relax after midnight with rain total generally about 1 1/2" with some local 2" amounts. lows will be in the upper 50's.

LONGER TERM (7 DAY OVERVIEW) A partly cloudy and cool Saturday ahead in the mid 60's with a few roaming showers. A good chance of showers and t-storms late Saturday night into Sunday morning as the cold front works it's way back north. Should see highs i the mid 70's. Summer returns for a couple of day with low and mid 80's Monday and Tuesday. A good bet for showers and t-storms Wednesday as a cold front comes through bringing the coolest temps so far in the low 60's on Thursday.

DETAILS: TODAY THROUGH TUESDAY
Today:(B) Scattered morning showers become more numerous later this morning into early afternoon with even a few t-storms possible. Showers and t-storms likely later this afternoon. High 72 SW winds increasing to 13-18 mph with gust near 30.
Tonight:(C) Showers and t-storms in the evening and then becoming scattered after midnight. Heavy rain possible. Low 58. Winds becoming N 7-10 mph
Saturday:(C) Chance of showers.. High 65 NE winds 8-12 mph
Saturday Night:(C) Increasing chance for showers and t-storms. Low 57 E winds 3-6 mph
Sunday:(C) Chance of showers and t-storms mainly in the morning. High 76 west and 71 east. SE winds 5-8 mph.
Sunday Night:(C) Chance of showers .Low 65
Monday:(B) Becoming mostly sunny. High 84
Monday Night:(B) Clear. Low 68
Tuesday:(C) Partly cloudy. High 83

What time you leaving, Boyd? Could be messy, so pack your patience and/or cash for the bar.

I'm still holding out hope I might be able to golf 9 holes tomorrow. Was going to walk anyway so carts being let out is a non-issue. Going to a local craft beer/art fest in the afternoon so while cool, it looks dry for that.

Yeah good luck. My guess is the plane you are supposed to use to take off at 10:20pm does not make it into town on time if at all later.

More info from Bob Gardiner...

The NWS just sent out the following Hydrologic Outlook and I thought you might want to know. Also, these storms are moving at about 40-50mph so they’re moving along pretty fast.

Hydrologic Outlook
Hydrologic Outlook
ILC007-031-037-043-053-063-075-089-091-093-097-099-103-105-111-
141-197-201-INC007-073-089-111-127-280000-

Hydrologic Outlook
National Weather Service Chicago IL
1013 AM CDT Fri Sep 27 2019 /1113 AM EDT Fri Sep 27 2019/

...Increasing confidence in flash flood potential late this
evening...

A weather system moving into the area will likely produce two
waves of rainfall today through early tomorrow morning, with flash
flooding and river flooding being possible. Rainfall moving into
northern and Illinois over the next several hours may be moderate
to heavy at times, but the chance of flooding is low. The second
wave of rainfall late this evening into the overnight has the
potential to produce heavier amounts of rainfall. Confidence has
increased since yesterday that this second wave of heavy rainfall
may produce flash flooding followed by river flooding concerns.

Much above normal rainfall has occurred across portions of
northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin over the last couple
weeks. This wet weather has caused elevated soil moisture and
elevated water levels on several rivers and streams. South of
I-80, lighter rainfall amounts have caused drier soil conditions
and lower water levels.

Shower and thunderstorm activity over northern Illinois as of 10
AM will move generally eastward across the area through early
this afternoon. Rainfall rates with this activity have generally
been 0.5-1.0 inches per hour, with isolated higher rates. Heaviest
rainfall of around one inch through this afternoon is generally
expected along and south of I-80, with locally higher amounts up
to two inches possible. This rainfall is not expected to be heavy
enough to cause significant stream rises.

After this activity moves east, a multi-hour dry period is
possible for most areas, followed by re-development of heavy
thunderstorms by this evening. The thunderstorm activity late
this evening has the potential to be very heavy in a narrow band
in northern Illinois, with rainfall totals of several inches
possible. This heavy rainfall may lead to flash flooding and river
flooding, especially if it occurs in the Des Plaines, Fox, and
Rock River Basins which continue have elevated water levels.

This outlook means that elevated water levels and potential
impacts are possible, but not yet certain. Persons should closely
monitor forecasts including the possibility of flood watches,
warnings, and advisories.

Yeah...I'm not sure how that works with International flights.

I'm half hoping if I'm going to wind up getting cancelled, it happens before I leave the house tonight.
