Light to moderate rain, but some serious lightning off in the distance here in Tinley.

It’s not usually this early.

There are levels of winter misery up here.

Just a heads up on the upcoming storm. The big low pressure system currently over the mountain west is heading this way. Fortunately, it looks like it will sweep east and then northeast so we will be spared the worst of the cold. The snow is only forecast to go as far southeast as Minneapolis…but snow keeps getting closer!

We are currently forecast to get about 0.5” – 0.75” of rain with a chance of thunderstorms. It looks like the heavier rain will stay well north of us up by Green Bay (see below). So, I’m guessing that if the storm moves a little north or south we may not see much change in rainfall. On the other hand, there is a lot of moisture heading into our area and a chance of “vigorous” thunderstorms could result in locally heavy rainfall. Fortunately, these storms are forecast to move through pretty quickly so they won’t have much time to drop rain. Today should be nice but we will probably begin to see high clouds this afternoon as the storm moves closer. The chance for precipitation begins to pick up Thursday afternoon but the atmosphere is pretty dry right now and any rain that falls early will probably evaporate before it hits the ground. Rain doesn’t really begin to pick up until late Thursday night and all day Friday. Greatest chance for thunderstorms is Friday afternoon. The storms should be out of our area late Friday night…and then comes the cold. High on Saturday is 49° with a 30mph wind bring the wind chill down to 42°. Expect lows over the weekend to be in the low 30s with wind chills in the upper 20s. The NWS is thinking there may be some more active weather early next week but it’s still too soon to get any idea of what’s coming.

Here is the Lake County SkyWarn forecast:
OUTLOOK FOR THE COUNTIES OF LAKE, SOUTHERN KENOSHA, EXTREME NORTHERN COOK AND EXTREME EAST MCHENRY

HAZARDS: NONE

YESTERDAY'S RECAP: A sunny and pleasant day yesterday with highs around 70. A lake breeze kept things a bit cooler at the lake and in east areas during the afternoon. Overnight lows were in the low 40's.

SHORT TERM ( 24 HOUR OUTLOOK) Another nice day ahead with plenty of sun this morning but some high clouds will try and move in later today. Should be 70 west again and about 65 at the shore with another afternoon lake breeze.

LONGER TERM (7 DAY OVERVIEW) Repeat of temps on Thursday with albeit more clouds as a cold front moves in Increasing chances for rain and maybe a few t-storms during the evening with occasional ran and a few t-storms late Thursday night. Occasional rain and breezy Friday with highs reaching the mid and upper 60's before noontime frontal passage. Temps will then fall to the mid 50's by evening on the well advertised pattern change. Much cooler Saturday with morning lows in the mid 30's and highs in the upper 40's. High Sunday will struggle to make and 50 and finally gets into the low 50's on Monday. Patchy frost on Sunday morning is possible if the winds fall off enough but Monday morning looks the best chance for frost. High in the low 50's again on Tuesday as the cooler pattern holds.

DETAILS: TODAY THROUGH SUNDAY
Today:(A) Mostly sunny with afternoon high clouds. High 71 west and 65 east. SE winds 7-10 mph
Tonight:(A) Partly cloudy. Low 51. SE winds 5-8 mph
Thursday:(B) Variable clouds. High 71 west and 68 east. SE winds 8-12 mph
Thursday Night:(B) Rain and a few t-storms late. Low 58. S winds 11-15 mph with gusts to 25
Friday:(B) Occasional rain and a few t-storms. High 67 falling to 53 by sunset. S winds becoming W 12-16 mph in the afternoon with gusts to 25
Friday Night:(B) A few evening showers possible. Colder. Low 35
Saturday:(A) Mostly sunny. High 48
Saturday Night:(A) Clear. Low 35
Sunday:(A) Mostly sunny. High 50

Meteorologists are tracking the Chicago-area’s first possible snowflakes of the season.

The far northwest suburbs and areas to the north and west are the most likely to see snowflakes Monday night and early Tuesday.

It appears the city will miss out on these, receiving some rain instead. Grassy snow accumulations toward Rockford and areas west of I-39 are not out of the question by daybreak.

A second weather disturbance may bring with it the chance of some chilly rain, which could include some wet snow, especially just to Chicago’s northwest — but awfully close to the city — late Tuesday night and Wednesday.

A chilly rain on Halloween Thursday could mix with or change into wet snow later in the day as the developing storm’s backside winds rake the area later Thursday and Friday, delivering the chilliest weather of the season to date. Accumulating show in and around the city and suburbs cannot be ruled out at this point. Current indications suggest the strongest chance of this occurring appears to be for areas west and north of I-55.

Forecasters are expecting a chilly pattern is expected to dominate the coming two weeks as we close out October and move into November 2019.
Yay

Yeah... I am starting to debate taking the kids to the mall instead of around the block if we are going to have rain and snow.

My kids love the forecast because they figure people will be throwing handfuls of candy at them to get rid of it. I told them they might be rethinking that plan after the first few houses of walking around in 30 degrees.

The forecasters are now saying that have increased confidence in the snow. Seems like CoF and Don Tiny might actually have to break out their snow shovels. North and NW burbs may get an inch to inch and a half to stick on the grass. Probably not much if any sticking snow in the SW Burbs, but flurries will be a flying.

Cold weekend coming up as well. Might be time to break in the fireplace for the season.

I ran out for lunch and it was absolutely miserable outside with the snow and the wind. Probably about 1/2"-3/4" on grassy surfaces here in Tinley. The pavement is just wet for the most part.
