Probably Ross or Loretta. Either way, whoever they hire is probably making 1/3 of what Maddon was making.

I think this teams problems run a lot deeper than the manager but for people to think you hire Ross and steak dinner boom WS ( which seems MANY do ) is ridiculous . He’s going to make a fuckton of mistakes ( just like the ones Maddon made that they couldn’t overcome ) . Will Bryant be less “ mad” and sack up if they hire him ? Will that make Kimbrel not give up 8 jacks in 20 innings ? Will Almora / Bote/ Happ not fucking suck ? I don’t think those are fixable by Girardi, Ross, Maddon or anyone else .

Whoever the next manager is will not be the next manager to take the Cubs to an NLCS.

Joe had a lot of success here, he will be missed.

Maddon will end up in San Diego, perfect place for him to close out his career and that team is loaded. It will be hard to win that division against LA, but there is a lot of talent out there for Joe to work with in an environment that is low pressure and seems suited for Maddon to give it one more go.

Joe had enough money that the Pads don’t need to offer something outrageous.

I agree with you that a lot of problems have nothing to do with Maddon which is why I have said that I have mixed feelings about this move. But I understand why the made the move. Things have to change.

Joe leaves behind a team that was one of the worst in the NL in:
- making dumbass errors on defense;
- walking people;
- making outs on the basepaths;
- not driving in runners from 2B.
- losing after winning going into the other team's half of the 9th.

I expect the new field manager to have more of a focus on those five things, and the general manager to trade away the players who sucked the most egregiously in the first four categories.

You might not like me saying this but it is absolutely Cub fan meatball to be wanting the ex player with no experience so bad. If they go Ross it is almost always a fail.

Seems like Ross may be a fair accompli but I still would prefer Girardi, but Girardi would not kiss Theo's ass so doubtful it will happen. Ross will be all ears with Theo so yeah, whatever.

The other major issue is the lack of player development at both the minor and major league level. Let's hope they have their eye on someone who can get this farm system in the top 5. The Astros/Dodgers model needs to be replicated from a results standpoint.

And as mentioned above, all these errors, baserunning gaffes, etc. has to land on Maddon's lap. Brian Butterfield was supposed to be this big elite coach, but they regressed.

Lots of issues from top to bottom. More heads need to roll and more importantly, impact talent needs to be recruited and hired.

Are we sure Theo isn't gonna peace out on the Cubs and go back to Boston?

Boston's one of the few farm systems in worse shape than the Cubs. Maybe Maddon and Theo will reunite in San Diego. Padres farm system fully stocked up and ready to be pillaged to build a temporary winner. Both guys started their careers out there. Maddon's wife and Theo both did law school in that area.

I don't think Theo and Maddon will end up together.

I have not seen any Cub fans who have equated Ross with a World series. Whoever they bring is going to struggle. Lot of holes.

Oh yeah, don't think that's gonna happen. But if Theo wants to make another Cubs-like run at building a World Series contender, San Diego's better positioned than the Red Sox. Maddon seems destined to return to the Angels. Brad Ausmus must be one hell of an interview. Ausmus keeps getting hired and then teams within the first season start asking themselves "why the hell did we hire this guy?" Ausmus was tagged as Mike Scioscia's successor before Scioscia retired. Ausmus had a David Ross style Special Assistant/next manager in waiting FO position with the Angels for the last year of Scioscia's tenure.

I thought Broad Assmus was going to be a superstar manager because of how smart everyone said he was as a player but it never really happened. I had hoped he would manage the Cubs one day. I think he had one good season with the Tigers and that was it.

That’s just the general nature of sports fans in general. People gravitate to the familiar and have fondness for those that helped them achieve success.

Don’t act like you KNOW it would fail. No one knows what this team will look like in April, let alone July of 2020.

Ausmus his first season with Detroit. When he had Scherzer, Verlander, Price, Porcello--who'll have 7 or 8 Cy Youngs among them after this season. Bullpen management killed Ausmus in the playoffs against the Orioles that year. Every damn game in that series vs the Orioles the starters would leave with a lead or a one run game and then Ausmus would manage his way to an L on the way to getting swept by Baltimore.

If you look at the team stats (hitting and pitching) between the Cubs and Cards, it's interesting. The Cubs were strangely ahead (or close to STL) in just about every category, except the Cards were first in defense (Cubs around 25th) and had way more stolen bases than the Cubs.

I'm sure there are some threads from five years ago detailing how fatigued the Rays had become of Joe and how he wouldn't make it to a second contract. These thoughts were met with scorn from cubbie fans because Joe bought reporters a drink.

based on what?

Sure he had the balls to go after Starlin Castro for bad play. He didn't go after Rizzo and Bryant for being disrespectful to the hitting coach and running him out of town.
