Looks like the apology did not matter. It seems insane to me that one Tweet was enough to create this chain reaction. China needs to be stood-up to. Not treated like some business partner.

Did the NBA ever actually apologize?

The NBA started WW3.

Make no mistake James Harden made his comments because all the players over there are scared to death about what would happen to them if they said anything else.

Quote:
So the NBA apologized, dubbing Morey’s retweet “regrettable” and noting that it “deeply offended many of our friends and fans in China.”

The commissioner on Tuesday issued a new statement that acknowledged the initial comments left “people angered, confused or unclear on who we are or what the NBA stands for.”

 Sure it isn't. More from the article.

“The fact we have apologized to fans in China is not inconsistent with supporting someone’s right to have a point of view,” Silver said this week while in Tokyo.

i think we all in some way are culpable for allowing china to be the way they are. we've all in some way taken advantage of it regardless how far removed we actually are. There are real trade problems going on. Trump tweeting that we need to begin looking for alternative manufacturing options a month or so ago, seems to be a legit thing that may have to happen. The NBA getting wrapped up in all of this is just kind of like icing on the cake.

But on the other side, if i'm steve kerr/ lebron, my answer is well, a few months ago, you all wanted me to shut up and coach/play basketball. which is it. you made a suggestion, i took that suggestion under consideration and ultimately decided, i will just shut up and play basketball. now you want me to have an opinion??? make up your mind i'm getting dizzy.

Kerr is doing his SJW bit just as much as ever. Just happens to be silent on this issue.

I get that he said he apologized, but he never actually did. Saying something was regrettable isn't the same as saying I'm sorry this happened. Silver and the NBA know exactly what they are doing in wording the statements the way they are. They just don't seem to realize that fence riding isn't going to work in today's climate.

Sounds like a great “I’m sorry what I said upset you” non-apology.

The NBA initially put out 2 versions of its statement, one in Twitterish, the other in Weiboese, with the latter containing specific phrases intended to show apologetic contrition to the target audience. "Hurt feelings" somehow being a magic phrase of apology. Apparently the people of China are all millennial snowflakes:

Quote:
BEIJING — The NBA put out one statement reacting to Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey’s tweet in support of the Hong Kong protest movement.

Depending on which language it was read in, the league’s words had very different meaning.

A politically charged disagreement over Morey’s tweet that showed support for Hong Kong anti-government protesters got an additional wrinkle when the NBA posted a statement Monday on Weibo — a Twitter-like microblogging site used in China — saying the league was “extremely disappointed” by what it called an “inappropriate” comment. The same post said the NBA’s stance was that Morey’s view “severely hurt the feelings of Chinese fans.”

Quote:
The “hurt feelings” phrase is commonly used by Chinese authorities to describe perceived gaffes by foreign parties. Similar phrasing was used by Mercedes-Benz in February 2018 when it had to apologize for quoting the Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, in a social media post. The auto company apologized for “wrong information” that “hurt the feelings of Chinese people.”

I think it's as much to do with the NBA's overtures to Japan as the single tweet from a failed GM's 200K follower twitter account. Morey was in Tokyo when he sent the ostensibly offensive tweet. And the first line in China's response to Silver's response to his initial response to China's first response to Morey's tweet calls out Silver being in Japan: "We have noticed that Adam Silver, who is the commissioner of the NBA, who is participating in an event in Japan..."

It's like when your gf catches you liking a couple instagram posts of your ex in a bikini. But apparently Adam Silver's gonna have to do more than buy China some sparkly presents and give Xi back-rubs while explaining how he was only liking Japan's H2D bikini posts cuz he felt bad for Japan cuz only a few thousand people had liked their pics and he wanted to help Japan's self-esteem.

So China faked the whole thing?

I thought I read where Silver said the English version was the league's official statement.

Fucking Pooh...

Posted in Chiner on the NBA's official Weibo account. I guess they can claim "bad translation" but I assume the NBA has peeps on payroll running their Weibo account who know the language. Maybe the Chinese government altered the post. Or Rick Perry hacked their Weibo account.

It looks like people were removed from a pre-season NBA game in Philadelphia for saying free Hong Kong:

On the one hand, the abridgment of basic liberties down the road from the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall and Sly Stallone's Rocky statue is an affront to heretofore self-evident truths. On the other hand...fewer Philly fans at professional sporting events.

This is kinda like the "oh you don't like poverty? Why didn't you have 15 homeless people living with you?"

Or "you claim climate change is a problem but you don't walk 50 miles to work each day???"

Although Kerr is being a bitch here, I don't care for that argument typically

I don't think "Do you support Democracy and individual rights" is really a political issue. It's more a core tenet of what it means to be an American.

I am curious if someone retired but still around the game like Shaq or Barkley ends up going off and vigorously support Morey and the HK people. Neither are particularly woke, both are too big for the NBA to fire or reprimand without causing a shitstorm of epic proportions.

Shaq comes from a military family. He is an extremely smart man. I can see him being disgusted by the whole thing and having a y'all fuck y'all moment.

It's really not like that at all. He's obviously an intellectual guy. He certainly considers himself one. He's a worldly and educated guy. He has all kinds of opinions that he espouses that are far outside the realm of basketball. That's all fine. But suddenly he acts like an Alzheimer's patient when asked directly about this one issue and acts like there's some confusion regarding a totalitarian government beating down people in the street.

Nobody is asking him to pick up a rifle and defend Hong Kong. It's really not outlandish to expect that he might simply say, "I stand with people fighting for freedom everywhere and support Mr. Morey's sentiments regarding Hong Kong."

Morey says he supports the protesters in Hong Kong, yet the very team he’s the GM of is in the state full of immigrant detention centers. Checkmate Libtards!
