That was pretty much true when that movie was made. Only a couple hundred guys played the main event back then compared to thousands of people now. It was much easier to be in the hunt when you only need to outlast a much smaller number of guys. Nowadays it is mostly luck that let you win tournaments that big. Eventually you are going to get a massive bad beat when you're playing in a tournament that now lasts over a week.

Recently added on Netflix. The movie is even better if you skip all of the scenes involving his girlfriend, hot as she may be. I’d also advise skipping the heart-to-heart discussions with Martin Landau, because nobody gives a shit.

I rewatched this movie this past Saturday for the first time in years. It's not as good of a rewatch as I remembered. I would have to say it's not really a good movie and is pretty overloved. I used to love it back when I was in high school.

I’ve seen a lot of poker madness since that movie came out. A small highlight was one of our claims attorneys quitting to become a professional poker player. We also have an underwriter who has won poker star tournaments. Both are very good players.
