Basically, China doesn’t play by our rules or moral code.

It would be an international incident if Rachel Nichols or Lebron James were put in a Chinese prison.

Their stature is too high for that to even happen. At worst they would be deported. That's why it falls upon them to speak up, because no one else on the ground in China can.

I completely disagree.

The Chinese are smart, they know that deporting them would be the easier way to handle it without the long term backlash.

Neither of us are over there, but I would guess all the fear and “cowardice” I am seeing from players, coaches, and media in China is far more likely concerning being detained than it is NBA money.

it's about the money, just look at the Rockets today in Japan (where they would be lauded by the locals for calling out China) reacted when asked questions.

The league projects a worst case of losing the China market would result in a 10-15% drop in the salary cap. This is 100% about that.

Knicks are one of the most prominent teams that aren't capped out currently, and have a lot of flexibility going forward.

If I were James Dolan I would consider sending out a statement blasting China about Hong Kong and then tell my GM to thank me for making his job 100x easier.

One of the few times Dolan isn't the most embarrassing owner in New York.

just look at how the Rockets and league handled today's press conference in Japan and how the league handled signs in Philly and DC.

I'll take back all of the nasty (but true) things I said about Jerry Reinsdorf if he steps up and does it.

Not just money.

Their celebrity gives them what woke people might call "privilege"

That gives them safety no one else would have. As I said, the absolute worst thing that would happen to them is deportation and Space Jam 2 not being released in China.

You are explaining this in United States ethical terms.

The Chinese have their own ethics.

The Chinese have their own almost Romulan like ethics, but they also are strategic thinkers and know arresting LeBron and what that would trigger would be a massive strategic blunder on their part.

well Trump also sold out Hong Kong in his talks with China so I expect morally repugnant behavior from him.

He's trying to get a trade deal and like the majority of Americans he doesn't give a fuck about the people in China

I wonder if some radlibs are gazing longingly at the PRC and how the most dangerous thing they could possibly say to the NBA was "you hurt our feelings!"

I wouldn’t say shit if I were them but it makes them look phony.

Maybe this is a good example of why too much globalization sucks.
