I know some people have been criticizing this board recently for what it is not or for what it no longer is, but this (apart from when someone is going through hell and others try to support them via language, which some might cynically say does not matter, though it does) is an example of the board at its finest. My ability to analyze has been expanded and I now have points-of-view in my cabeza that I did not have--and perhaps could not have had--before.

And I hate to say it, but it also helped that some of the dumb-asses in the politics section* were not chiming in with their unsupportable claims. No one derailing the discussion in non-productive ways.

Looks like the NBA won

Quote:
The government of China "abruptly moved on Thursday to tamp down public anger at the NBA," according to reporting from the New York Times. There were concerns beginning to surface "that the rhetoric was damaging China's interests and image around the world."

Editors at state news outlets have told reporters to avoid emphasizing the NBA issue.

“I think this issue will gradually de-escalate — Global Times will not push to keep it hot,” Hu Xijin, the newspaper’s top editor, wrote in an electronic response to a request for comment. “I also hope the American side won’t make any moves to escalate it.”

The issue began with a Tweet from Daryl Morey about Hong Kong.

The NBA players, owners, and coaches are still refusing to say jack about China. The NBA didn't win this one. The fucking micro-dick Chinese censors won this round.

Charles Barkley admits it's all about money...

https://www.tmz.com/2019/10/10/charles- ... -incident/

"They have billions of dollars at stake," Barkley says. "It's a business decision. I understand the NBA. The players and the owners both got billions of dollars at stake."

China said they were strongly dissatisfied with the outcome.

Adam Silver said tough shit.

Two days later China's top state media editor said they are going to drop the issue.

That sounds like an L for China my friend. Take that spin zone elsewhere.

Both look bad on this one. The NBA didn't necessarily have to back Morey up but they shouldn't have denounced the comments either.

China overreacted when they decided to all of a sudden make Daryl Morey the spokesman for the NBA

yet the NBA still can't and won't say a word about China. You can bet they'll return to keep kissing the ring. At the end of the day, China and their censors have control of what the NBA can and will say in this matter. Until that changes, the NBA has lost and so has this country. Chinese dictators tell us what our movies, sports stars, and companies can do or say.

yes this thread has been about the NBA, but Apple, Google, Blizzard, Disney, etc. are all guilty here as well.

The only heroes in this story have been the folks at South Park Studios

am I understanding the story correctly? the NBA would not let Harden and Westbrook answer a question in China? That doesn't appear very woke to me....

even worse, it was in Japan so they should've been free to say anything.

As I pointed out earlier, such comments would be welcomed by the Japanese people.

NBA is saying it was a mistake. Rogue spokesperson has been dealt with.

That's called last minute damage control.

Given how everyone answering these questions sounds like they're reading a ransom note, it's quite clear that orders from above came down telling them not to talk about it.

Meanwhile we have signs being confiscated from fans in US arenas (not even on Chinese soil) and fans are told not to chant "free Hong Kong."

Stop covering for this league FF, they don't deserve it.

Ditto for Blizzard and every other company involved in this.

Speaking of Blizzard, their convention is in a few weeks. It's going to be a shit show as the tickets are non-refundable and a bunch of pissed off people who want to cancel can't so they're going to find ways to protest there.

It should be a fun livestream to watch

The extent to which this has taken China way off guard cannot be understated. They usually propagate these kinds of stories to rile up their domestic base while counting on the fact that Americans are too concerned with arguing over pronouns or Stormy Daniels to notice. I genuinely believe the Chinese thought the American left would sooner side with a communist autocracy than Trump's trade war.

Well its not the case and for the first time Americans are starting to take the Chinese threat seriously.

You'd think a centralized economy where everyone is told exactly what to think but that still has all your favourite brands is exactly what all these democratic socialists who have never held a real job wanted. Maybe they're just upset they got beat to the punch?

There's a fair amount of dipshit leftists who side with China over the "imperialist swine" of HK, but they're tedious and unpersuasive and they all live in Brooklyn. This is one of those rare occasions where politics do stop at the water's edge and we can all agree that the CCP sucks.

Do they understand that Hong Kong was a colony and not a colonizer? Or do they really just hate HK because it has things like commerce and basic freedoms.

I think it's that Hong Kong represents capitalist excess and western supremacism, and that lots of Hong Kongers seem to maintain an affinity for the British. Cuck shit, if you will. But I don't know how you can ding Hong Kong on capitalist excess when you look at what the PRC has been up to. If nothing else, I hope this dust-up is instructive regarding the differences between New Dealers and delusional Maoists, but dare to dream on that one.

Mate, they are still both a bunch of squealing homosexuals who spend all their time online looking for new things to ruin. You need to be a little better.
