Yea we all like to say going woke means going broke but its actually not true. It sure is an attractive narrative though, the infantile dreams of grown adults who act like children getting stomped by the cold hard fiscal realities. Doesnt work that way. A typical white woman spends more on consumer bullshit annually than you do in a decade. She's the one they are after and they'll alienate everyone else to get to her.

Gawker just fails now because its a union hellhole that'll never turn a profit because the inmates are running the asylum.

Digital publishers going broke is not really related to the politics of it as this is a problem regardless of the slant (although more-so with the left sites as there are heavily oversaturated).

The reason these jobs will dry up is that the bubble has burst. When these digital publishing sites were set up, they had unrealistic valuations and could be sold a few years down the line and even greater inflated values. Now 5-10 years into this bubble, companies reached their pinnacle and were still cash flow negative. They got offered up again for sale and the next buyer would be paying less than the previous one and this trend has continued. Gawker has now been sold twice in the last 3 years at a lower valuation each time. VC's aren't idiots, they see the trend so they will stop funding the set-up of new digital outlets.

The reason this model fails has nothing to do with politics and everything to do with the fact they are tough to monetize. Ads aren't enough to support paying an entire floor of writers and sponsored content can only get you so far when people know it when they see it.

Is it possible to succeed as a digital media outlet? Sure, Barstool has found multiple avenues to monetize their audience. The problem is that type of formula probably doesn't work as well with a site who's focus is political.

tl;dr summary: these guys should learn to code as they'll run out of outlets to run to soon

I suppose it is too much to ask for an on line news source to take the form of you city newspaper which, while privately owned, seemed like a public trust resulting in confidence in the reporting. It was the columnists who gave the paper its character or bent but the reporting could be relied upon as true. While the columnists were usually seasoned reporters (not always true) there was a clear line between the two.

Print journalism went in the shitter after the Weekly World News stopped being around to keep them honest.

It was mostly just "Donald Trump Is Dumb And Does Dumb Things Because He's Dumb" or Hamilton Nolan making bad arguments. It sucks in some sense to see it go, but these Brooklyn journalists are all thick as thieves and always end up landing on their feet as one VC-funded content mill closes and another opens.

that's about the summation of Splinter. It could have been much more.

That era is over. VC's have learned the hard way that these ventures are just flushing cash down a toilet so they'll dry up soon.

I don't know. There will always be a structure of make-work jobs for Ivy/Oberlin/Grinnell grads in the big city. They might not get to write "My Boss Is Retarded" for commenters named "Tadahito Iguchi Mane" but they'll always be kept busy.

Yea none of this is wrong.

But be careful saying they need to learn to code. Precious globalism has made H1-B's or just direct outsourcing to India those old reliable software engineer jobs back into low paying wagecages. The faulty-but-really-not-faulty Boeing 737 MAX software was written in I think Hyderabad. And lest you think its just American unscrupulousness that this entails Airbus has software engineers in the same building.

No, I meant in your personal life. There's good development work to be found literally all over the country.

$100k+ in Naperville, I'm assuming the equivalent of that based on COL anywhere else. My buddy in Oxford, AL can find development work, I'm pretty sure most qualified people can anywhere. I know my company is always looking to hire more.

Is $100k/year really doing that well in Naperville? And honestly I dont know the difference between engineer and developer or whether there even is one. Puters arent really my thing.

Assuming both members of the houshold each make about that much, then yeah.

I guess it depends on how materialistic one is. I would love to make that much and still feel comfortable with where I'm at.

You want to talk about privilege? Privilege is living in New York and working for a publication where you can refuse assignments and then give yourself an assignment of calling your boss an asshole.

That's too bad. As dumb as it was, "What Did We Get Stuck in Our Rectums Last Year?" was worth a chuckle every time they did it.

 It's almost as if no one at deadspin(or whatever they are actually called) understands that sometimes employees have to listen to what management is saying even if they would prefer a different way of doing things.

they're picking a bad time to take a stand too. The VC money that ensured a new outlet popped up every other week for them to land at is gone.

I'll offer them some equity in my barstoolsports competitor brooklyncoffeshopcouchsports.

All these journos circling up wagons for Barry in the mentions is really something considering he basically had to beg for mercy a year or two ago when everyone remembered he made lots of rape jokes.
