You're well aware that gun control is a Left wing talking point. You also know that supporting players kneeling during the anthem is seen as Left wing. These are just a couple issues I remember Steve Kerr weighing in on without being asked. That certainly doesn't mean he has to be a leading voice against the Chinese dictatorship, but it's not like the question came out of the blue. It's directly related to the NBA right now. And his sudden confusion strikes me as disingenuous as best.

And again, I've always liked LeBron. I don't think you will find a post of mine that criticizes his activism or community involvement or suggests that he should "shut up and dribble". And again, the same applies to him as Kerr, he needn't adopt Hong Kong as a pet cause. Nobody is asking him to do so. But the question is pertinent as it clearly relates to NBA involvement in China. And he seems to be choosing the wrong side. I'm not "outraged" about that. I just see it for what it is.

That's absolutely false. Somewhere you've gotten the idea that I'm strongly pro-Donald Trump in spite of me clearly stating on multiple occasions that I would never vote for him. Any "support" I have for the president has to do with our elections and being governed by officials legitimately chosen by the people rather than by the machinations of some bureaucrats in a back room in Langley, Virginia. I'm relatively certain that Matt Taibbi isn't a big fan of the president either, although if he posted the following piece in this forum he would undoubtedly be called a "trumpet" by some:

Your complaints about LeBron are probably just because you are a Chicagoan who loves Jordan.

We need Jason back at the Score to go on the radio and go to war for this idiot LeBron.

EDIT: to wit, I just put it on to see how Dan would try to defend LeBron but all they're doing is talking about how many weddings Connor McKnight has been a best man in. You really don't know what you got till it's gone.

This was a pretty big opportunity to do something right, to actually model what taking a stand and risking something means. He's been a good man in the past. He completely whiffed here. He also shifted the blame, which is either devious or estupido. And he had a week, and probably several handlers, to craft his response. Come on, LeBron.

I'm a big believer in celebrities and people with power using their platform to give voice to people or issues they are passionate about. LeBron has done that for black America. It would be foolish for him to jump into geopolitics. I also believe that it would have been disrespectful and dangerous to visit another country and then lecture them while you are there.

One could argue that all of LeBron's efforts contributed to building his brand and furthering his future economic opportunities.

Not saying he didn't enjoy "doing good" but I don't think these things are one dimensional. "Doing good" might be secondary. And in the current case, voicing his support of basic human rights would be in direct conflict to securing his business interests. So suddenly...'it isn't okay to speak out without considering how it affects others.'

Let's just call it disingenuous, at best, and move on.

I think that is fair.

My problem is LeBron's answer was bad. From what I can tell, it basically was Morey shouldn't have done that because either:
1) Players could have been abducted by the Chinese.
2) Players are going to lose money in endorsements/salary

If 1 is what he meant, then the NBA better never do another official league event in China. If 2 is what he meant, then that's just stupid.

He could have just said "I'm more worried about issues in my hometown and cities I am in" instead of seemingly talking like he was handed talking points from the Chinese government.

Well he just did. He said Morey wasn't educated on the situation.

Everyone seems to be saying the lines about being "uneducated" and causing "spiritual harm" are boilerplate CCP propaganda. So that's great.

That's been my contention all along. Why is it up to the NBA to correct the wrongs committed by China?

We sold our collective souls out to violators of human rights a long time ago and MANY on here were actually quite comfortable with it.

LeBron is educated enough to know the NBA is doing business with a country in which he's worried about being abducted.

THAT'S what LeBron is talking about when he said Morey was uneducated. The NBA is in bed with authoritarians so goddammit, don't be poking the bear while our dicks are hanging out.

I think anyone who would argue that would be ignorant of history. There were reasons star athletes remained silent about politics until their careers were over. Ali wasn't beloved when he was speaking out. He became beloved once he was essentially mute. LeBron took a risk. He was able to do it because guys like Jordan paved a way with their verbal silence on politics.

I don't think the 2 things are mutual exclusive. LeBron hasn't dipped his toe into international politics before. I don't think it's a leap to believe that he just wants to focus on America and specifically black America when discussing politics. That also doesn't mean that his future earnings can't factor into his take on China.

You're free to call it whatever you want.

I assumed that it was #1 but I also didn't love his comments about Morey.

I completely agree with your last take. That would have been the best and most political savvy response. LeBron isn't the athlete who strikes me as being that polished.

True, but he did take a stand on China. And he criticized someone else who had a different take because that other person doesn't have his special, gnostic knowledge of the situation. It was a bullshit, dishonest answer, and he's getting called on it.

That's just not true. That was the nonsense you came at me with last week. I've never criticized LeBron for his political stances. I've never criticized Kerr or Pop for theirs either. And I don't think any of them have ever been widely disliked in this forum either. But suddenly they're feigning some kind of moral confusion about what's happening in Hong Kong. Yet somehow I suspect all three of them have complete understanding and strong opinions regarding the highly complicated situation in Syria.

Its difficult to say that this isn't true when a number of people in this thread have already used it as the primary reason for why they believe he is a phony.

Well, I don't believe "social justice" ends at the bottom of your driveway and since he is so outspoken in every other instance, it would have been entirely appropriate for him to at least lend token support to Morey. But now, he's gone and done the exact opposite of that. It seems a weird thing to defend.

People who advocate for a cure for cancer aren't usually beat up because they don't mention heart disease. LeBron is focused on an issue in America that impacts his community.

That's all good and well, but regardless of how you try to spin it, LeBron showed himself as a phony scumbag when he had the fucking balls to criticize Morey. I don't think LeBron would take too kingly to someone talking down to him and talking about how he's not educated on matters of police brutality and income equality and he needs to educate himself before speaking out.

Fuck LeBron. His statement was the most cowardly statement put out by anyone related to this entire thing.

There's no spin here. LeBron's work has always been on issues that impact the lives of the underprivileged in black America. He's concerned about the police killing unarmed black men and not being held accountable until recently. China isn't his fight, black America is. That shouldn't be difficult for any reasonable person to understand.

I do agree with you when it comes to Morey. My assumption was that he was upset about Morey not thinking about the safety of the players before sending his tweet. If not, he shouldn't have said anything.

pizza_Place: What??
I guess I'm the only one reading between the lines when LeBron called Morey's tweet uneducated.

If you read between the lines, he's admitting the NBA is doing business with a bad actor. He's saying Morey's tweet put players in China in peril. That's the "uneducated" part.

What is funny about that?

The fact it's a 100% bullshit excuse, as evidenced by the comments of Kerr, Popovich, LeBron, Harden etc. when all of them were outside of China when they made their idiotic statements.

Just admit this is about selling shoes and getting his dumbass movie cleared by Chicomm censors.

China doesn't strike me as a nation unwilling to use a someone like LeBron to make a political statement.

Retweeting something put the players in danger? That's ridiculous. LeBron is attacking someone for speaking out on justice issues. It's a terrible look. It's also pretty embarrassing that the person who want to be a global icon is limited to only speaking out about social issues if it concerns black men in America. So if it benefits him and his friends.
