Firemen get more days off than anyone. Did I claim that a job of a teacher was more dangerous than a cop or fireman? Of course not. I said that a teacher is more valuable to our society than a cop or a fireman.

My employer pays straight out of Master's in a planning field $67k. But that's for 12 months with only 35 days off a year (sick/Vaca/holiday), and we only hire about 10 nationwide a year so we can be picky.

Firemen work shifts that last days, so I dont know if it works out to them getting any more time off than a teacher. And there's just no way teachers are more valuable than cops or firemen. Professionals and skilled trainers maybe I guess you could make the argument but your average primary, secondary or high school teacher? Easy to replace. Their expertise is usually in bullshit.

Firemen work 2 or 3 days a week.

Why did you continue your education if you truly believe they are worthless?

It's this way of thinking along with the pay that makes people avoid the profession and it causes apathy in the people who are educating our future leaders. Very few people become successful without an education.

Two or three days a week x twenty-four hour shifts = forty-eight to seventy-two hour weeks. I dont know a teacher working those hours, do you?

I continued my education with actual professionals who would indulge instead of stifle curiosity and interest. My French teacher in high school was upset if I went ahead and my passion for history was basically strangled in the womb by social studies teachers. It took years since getting out of high school to realize there was no shame in being voracious, and that it was really just a bunch of lazy ass teachers who (ok my French teacher when I was 17 spoke better French than me and probably still does) knew less about the things I wanted to learn than I did.

Certified flight instructors, university professors, mentors...these are valued members of the educational system. Experts who can impart their knowledge onto others. Teachers are just babysitters watching the clock hoping none of the kids make them have to do any extra work today. To say they are more valuable than search and rescue (what fire deptartments really are) or law enforcement is insanity.

The top 5 schools in this state are found in CPS.

There is a reason that really really affluent people attempt to have their children enrolled in these extremely "selective" schools. Conduct a little research and then get back at me.

Your property taxes go towards bribing US News and World Report to keep these above-average public high schools ranked among the elite. Then you bribe your alderman or who ever even more money so your kid can get into them. And then the teachers, among the highest paid in the USA, go on strike so they can poet their clever signs on Instagram.

Teachers are already overpaid or at least paid appropriately. Saying they deserve "more" has become one of those empty phrases that makes people feel good but doesn't make any sense.

They dont work one-third of the year. June, July, August they have off plus winter, spring break and all the holidays. Its totally disingenuous to post their median income without accounting for this.

Sure but MANY of the private schools have similar criteria yet all we ever hear is how "great" (read it in this thread as well) they happen to be.

In addition shouldn't all of the other great, non CPS schools scratch the top 100 nationally if they are in fact so great?
