 Post subject: Living near a freeway

I'm about to be a first time home owner. Been looking around with my realtor the last few weeks. I found something that I really really liked this past weekend. Only issue is it's about 400 feet from a major freeway (202). The homes across the street back directly into a giant wall that separates the freeway from the neighborhood.

Sound isn't the issue. It's white noise to me. But the pollution freaks me out. Am I being silly?

Cardiovascular problems as well. Doesn’t sound too good. I grew up close to 88 in Downers Grove and thought nothing of it as a kid. I guess we’re more informed now.

What's "white noise" to you is probably a major negative to most who didn't grow up within earshot of an arterial street. And it likely will be a nuisance that could become a factor if you refinance or sell.

The health concern is a logical question though. I suspect that it will become a hot topic soon.

As long as the freeway didn’t spring up over night you should be fine. Your offer just needs to take the freeway into account.

I lived in a far south suburb for all of the ten months that I could take the darkness, quiet and feeling of isolation.

I jumped at the chance to move to the top floor of a city high rise where if you tried, you could hear street sounds. To each his own, but I shudder to think what rent there is now. :lol:

I think you're absolutely right. I feel that the younger generation care more about this stuff because the information is out there now.

The offer would definitely take it into account. 202 has been there a while but there is a huge $2 billion extension which will be completed by the end of the year connecting west + east valley = more traffic.

Grew up in Innisbrook, right off of Highland Ave. and 35th. Thought nothing of it as a kid. But now I look at a map and and realize we were so close to 88 and 355.

I can't imagine it is much worse than living in a big city filled with cars. The noise will lower the value but that is built in already.
