Autoplaying ads with sound enabled that were hidden at the bottom of the page where you didn't see them seemed like such a great idea.

Isn't it more likely that Farmers pulled out not due to the critical post but to the fact that G/O didn't meet ad goals?

I think the unionization really screwed up their thinking. It seems like they think they are like coal miners creating a human wall to stop anyone from going into the mine by posting stories about dogs and taking stands against autoplay ads for people who don't use ad blockers. I'm guessing they think that all the union workers in the world are cheering them on as they fight for what is right in terms of blogging when most of them simply want to keep collecting a paycheck so they can go home and feed their family.

Or they were working on the misguided notion that once they because union employees, they were untouchable.

I liked this quote better, because it's true, and these cancel culture dipshits don't seem to understand that:

Quote:
PS - How about this narrative that Deadspin has been some bastion of great journalism for the past 2 decades? Umm talk about revisionist history. I mean god forbid all these blue checkmark brigade losers who hate me and think Barstool is bad look into Deadspin's past. They make me look like Mother Theresa. They’ve posted sex videos without consent, outed people without consent and had an entire division dedicated to dick pics. You aren’t the New York Times or even the NY Post. You don’t have the moral high ground and you never did. So stop trying to act holier than thou. If you hate working for your new owners so much go quit and find a new job. Oh right none of you have any talent or spine and know you probably wouldn’t be hired anywhere else.

This cuts right to it. All their martyrdom looks especially silly if you have an ad blocker!

LOL the entire staff at Deadspin is quiting.

I hope they know that they are about 3 years too late to make this move. Quitting a media job in 2019 is like getting up to the boat deck on Titanic after all of the lifeboats had already been lowered.

Laura Wagner's insistence on "you give me money, and then I tell you what to do" gives her a bright future in radio consulting, at least.

This is bad. I hope we don't eventually lose a good Deadspin writer.

One thing I find absolutely hilarious in all of this is how quiet the folks at "The Root" "Kotaku" "AV Club", and "Jezebel" have been.

They're just shutting up and towing the line other than a few sympathetic RT's

I guess they know their place and role.

If Roth and Magary leave I doubt I’ll visit the site again.

They are apparently the only people left based on Twitter

Ray Ratto has been good but I think he isn't really on staff.

I hope the people quitting Deadspin realize that by quitting, they have forfeited their unemployment insurance claims

I doubt any of them walked out the door without another job lined up. Megan "The Bad Part of Williamsburg" Greenwell left in a huff and was running wired.com the next day.

This is digital media and most of the laid off Splinter News folks are still stuck freelancing or begging via Patreon. These people just left without a parachute and will find a rough job environment in their field as more and more sites downsize or shutdown. I think Greenwell's case will be the exception here.

Well Gawker thought it was a good idea to out him in the name of "journalism" (or at least that's what I'm told by the blue checkmarks that they did). They got their sweet revenge though.

commenting on Barstool was the only way Deadspin ever got clicks. It basically became their entire business plan for the last 2 years.

That’s not remotely true. But, to that point, their most high traffic articles are not about sports so their new bosses are most certainly the dumbest people involved in this entire dispute.

If social media engagement is a hint of clicks, then their Barstool content certainly was their most viewed material.

This is how a digital media CEO can make the job easy for her sales team.

I don’t think it is. I’m relatively sure their biggest hits were Magary’s brain story, Roth’s Trump articles, and then some Bartsool and other sports media stories
