So who's going to bankroll the Deadspin In Exile that's going to give all these people jobs?

Assume Laura Wagner will be picked up by Barstool. Barstool, Grantland/Ringer, Athletic, 538, Slate even the NY Times: all these online content providers rely on podcasts to prop up the dead-pixels-text content. Deadspin never got into the podcast thing in a substantial way, other than ad-free Deadcast.

Deadspin was propped up by Kinja Deals, I think.

My prediction: The Intercept Sports

funny how an ad-free entity couldn't support the site.

Barstool has its podcasts, but it also has other revenue streams such as live events, an e-commerce store, videos with actual sponsors, a vodka they are promoting (which has already sold out multiple times), and premium subscribers.

CH said this earlier, but Barstool has something Deadspin never had, fans. Barstool has monetized their following and done so quite successfully.

if dunking on a vanquished foe is living "rent free", then I guess you're right.

Ogie, who’s cock is stiffer right now, you or Portnoy? You won’t be needing the Parkins wonder pills for a while.

They're nobodies. They're talentless. They'll never work in this town again. I'll talk about them constantly.

Magary is also the only person in this group who is instantly employable at another outlet and who will have his share of offers before lunch. The rest of this group are nobodies who will be vying with the thousands of other out of work bloggers and journalists for a very limited number of open jobs an a rapidly shrinking industry.

When Dave holds a grudge, he holds a grudge. He said he is the type of person who would shoot cannonballs at his enemy and after they have sunk would train the cannon to continue firing at the wreck on the bottom of the ocean.

I think at this point we've hit the firing at the shipwreck phase.

Maybe it's because I'm not a Barstool partisan and thus not gloating, but I find it very hard to believe they undertook all this together without a lifeboat.

WYTS has fallen off hard though. He's run out of insults and this year just bashed Trump supporters in every article.

I liked the one about how the one team's fans were fat white trash.

If this were 2016, there would but jobs out there for them. However this is 2019 and there aren't enough open jobs available for that to happen. I honestly think these are 25 year olds who are still young and foolish enough to think there are jobs out there when there aren't.

This was a post-bubble industry and we're seeing an outlet close shop seemingly every other week while others are announcing lay-offs.

Having a union proved pretty pointless since everyone had to quit.

True. Still a good way to burn 10 minutes on a mindless August Wednesday afternoon at work.

I understand it is a little bit simplistic but it is pretty funny that ultimately there was a mass quitting by sports writers on a sports site because new management wanted them to talk about sports.

You would be right if you were talking about people quitting a local or even major-market newspaper in a huff, but I don't think the people who get to write for Deadspin inhabit the same world as the rest of us do. They're all products of elite upbringings and elite universities and as such are exquisitely well-networked; if no one can find a job for Laura Wagner, they'll make one for her. They're all In and once you're In it's hard to be Out.

It seems that the people who were laid off from Spinter about a month ago haven't landed anywhere yet. As for these guys, a lot of digitial sites have had layoffs and I'm seeing most of those writers now stuck freelancing. These Deadspin writers are in the same boat. The reason these guys used to be able to move from job to job was that a new site would pop up every week to hire them. Unless these people find their own backer to launch a new site, I'm not seeing that happen.

Well, neither one of us has batted 1.000 on predictions, that's for sure. We'll see.

I guess we can revisit this in a month and see who has new places of employment in their twitter bios and who has a Patreon/PayPal link and a few smatterings of freelanced articles
