Because, then management would have to admit that they had a satisfactory morning show years ago and made the decision to break it up and put in its place the abomination that was the MNMS. In other words, we fucked up. Decision makers in business management never want to make it look like they fucked up.

Fred was a non factor when with Murph. Murph dominated the show. Fred just never really wanted to enforce his will. I don't think he has many thoughts any way.

Then, while with Pappy, he just became the "yes man". He just wanted to fly under the radar and stay with the Score. He acomplished that.

Fred's been around for years without making any impact. You can say good-bye to him.

I don't know, I thought Fred was more assertive with Murph than he was with North, where his main comment was "That's Right"

Maybe he can get his own identity back now.

Yeah, a little bit. It was definitely a Murph-driven show, but I sensed more of a partnership between Murph and Fred than now where Fred seems afraid of North's "legendary" status.

Fred is a career second banana. What I like about him is that he seems to recognize that. Sometimes you just have to recognize what you are and be content with that. The whole North morning thing was such a fiasco that it tainted not only North, but the rest of the "team" as well. I wonder what Fred's future is at the Score if, in fact, the MNMS is history.

I agree, Murph is a strong personality as well and Fred played his wingman well. I remember being disappointed when North took over.

Just around the time the North morning takeover from Murph & Fred was being rumored, I was in Bourbonnais for Bears camp and Murph and Fred were doing the morning show from there and I asked Fred what was up and you could just tell from his comments that his attitude was--and I'm paraphrasing, not quoting exactly--man, I don't know, I'll do whatever they want me to, I--and my wife--want me to keep this job. After that, I always sensed that Fred felt he was lucky to stay on in mornings and, not only that, that he was paired with this "legend" and "the face of the Score." I was never surprised that Fred basically turned into a yes-man for North. I think it was a matter of career preservation for him. Now we'll see where it leads for him.

Mulligan and Hanley these past two days have been better than any other morning show that's been on The Score... and I am someone who never heard Tom Shaer of the Bull and the Bear.

Shaer was...oh God, let me see -- bad, bumbling, condescending, bad, dumb, bad, pompous, bad -- I guess that covers it. Anyone remember Dorothy Humphrey and the other fool (I think his name was Tom, too, and he's since passed on)? Jim Memolo was, and still is, brutal.

The Bull and The Bear: I like Buffone, but I think Van Lier is a clown, so I never listened.

Murph and Fred: I find Murph to be similar to Grobstein -- completely unlistenable. Fred is just, well, I think his comments to Pappy's Crappy sum up how I think of Fred. Someone who is hoping to blandly and inoffensively blend into the background and keep collecting paychecks until someone realizes he doesn't belong there and gets rid of him.

I think Mully and Hanley will be a great fit for mornings, and I don't know how likely it is, but I would LOVE for their first ratings book to exceed North's last several books. And I hope they don't get a billboard so North can fool himself into thinking that's the reason for their success. I do think Mulligan is a little too yelly, though.

If I recall correctly - weren't they only on from 6-8am? I can take Murph in small doses & a similar time slot would be OK with me...but 4 hours of Murph is simply too much!

You forgot to add "fraud" in there as well. He would take faxes and twist around the words to support his position, and then attempt to defend it by saying the fax was "too wordy" and "his interpretation."

I liked Jim and consider him to be a solid pro, but he got caught up in the "solidarity to support the host" aspects of the program. Its the same problem that Fred Huebner had suffered with North

Shaer was an an ass. I loved how he had the "24 second shot clock" to fire away, yet if you ripped on him or the score he would cut you off.
Well, he's running TSN media now, so I guess he's doing ok.

murph and fred had a real good show during baseball season - it seemed to me that they did a real good job balancing the cubs/sox chatter. football/basketball season was a tougher listen, but back then when i had a long commute, i loved the baseball talk. it was a pretty good show.

The Murph and Fred show was hampered/ruined by the constant updates and Scores on the 4's. I'll never forget they'd come out of commercial and start talking for like 1 minute and before they even got a rhythm the music would come on that would take them out to yet another commercial/update/scores on 4's thing. It was terribly constructed and ruined any opportunity for talk or taking calls. The show could be listenable if they brought it back with a normal sports radio clock.

I forgot about "Scores on the Fours." but you're right--totally annoying. And unnecessary. Sometimes they'd have to interrupt talking about a particular game so Fred could do the update and give the score of THAT game.
