Read a decent book a year or so ago on the fall of the Ottoman Empire. It was a lot of WWI stuff but really from the perspective of the battles that happened in the modern middle east. The Armenian stuff made a lot more sense after reading the book. If I recall correctly, the Russian Revolution played a huge part because they stopping fighting on that front and allowed the Turks to fight unopposed.

The Turks should just own up and apologize and atone. It’s akin to Holocaust deniers.

I'm guessing Turkish intelligence tapped his phone and his him on the wire on a gay sex line. That's a more likely explanation with this closeted burrito.

I think I saw that same book (Decline and Fall of the Ottoman Empire, I assume?) and was going to buy it but figured I'd set out to read it and never get to it. I do know that the empire was on its last legs by World War I, that's about it.

There's no excuse for denying the Armenian genocide. Not only was it an atrocity in and of itself, it was a dry run for the Holocaust in a lot of respects.

He also blocked a resolution condemning Genghis Khan and his hordes.

How about Congress do some actual work? Is that possible?

Checked my library, the Fall of the Ottomans, Eugene Rogan. Excellent book.

I was interested in that after reading about the fall of the Eastern Roman Empire in the 15th Century.

The Byzantine Empire gets completely overlooked in middle/high school history classes. It's as if Greece goes from great ancient civilization to epaulet-shouldered shipping magnates with nothing in between.

When the Roman empire was split, history quit caring about the East. After learning about the atrocities there, I understood why.

Plus how much lamb, olives and horrendous liquor can one be saddled with?

That genocide was the bluprint for what Hitler did. I think it goes beyond what that gaylord votes. I am pretty sure we still have missiles in Turkey.

It was a fantastic read and filled in a lot of gaps on my history/religion knowledge. So much of our history is taught as Western European, but that Empire pulls you much farther east.

I wonder if it is a legacy of our country’s British roots, and the Romans invaded Britain in 55 BC (right?) and held it for centuries until the Empire itself collapsed.

Yeah, I read a long form piece about the U.S.-Turkey relationship and it covered how difficult/impossible it would be to move those missiles out of there. Turkey is an "ally" that isn't really an ally. It's a sticky situation. And a good reminder of why NATO- at least in its current form- is obsolete.

When you’re in NY, get the lamb chop appetizer at Spark’s. Yes that Spark’s for those of you familiar with mob history.

Iirc my world history classes went from the fall of Rome, 10 minutes about the Mongols then right to the Holy Roman Empire for a mention, then everything Britannia.

yep

I don't go in for all that mint jelly crap. I grew up on the cheap lamb chops. My mom would broil the blade and shoulder chops, salt and pepper was all they got...along with some mashed potatoes. Delish.

I am a huge fan of the rack of lamb you get at Costco. I apply Montreal Steak Seasoning along with a good BBQ rub and then I roast them in the oven at 425 or so...or I grill them. Fanfuckingtastic!

If I recall world history, it was quite a bit about Egypt. But all other non-U.S. history is as you describe it.

I had this government class at UIC where it took a deep dive into other political systems of the world. It was supposed to feature places like Mexico and Japan. But the Eurocentric professor spent the entire semester on the UK and France. I recall some Mexican-American student being all upset because she was looking forward to learning about the Mexican system of government. And I had to agree with her. I only learned about other systems from reading the Economist for years.

You should've stopped yourself before "I don't drink", you aren't new around here.

Never cared for olives and don't like gam-ey meat. I can only eat a gyros 2-3x a year.

State Dept believes Ukraine is of vital interest to our security. Or so say the people who have been there since the Cold War
