The last two posts give you two opinions. Take the first one.

I buy a new Lennox every few years. House stays warm most of the time.

Did Abt do the installation? I think they have great appliance installers...hadn't really thought about them for HVAC.

We went with an American Standard (owned by the same company as Trane) through Four Seasons about 7 or so years ago. It's the high efficiency model. We paid a little over $4,000 with installation. During the first winter of operation, we started to hear a loud buzzing noise and the furnace would not kick from the first to second stage. Had a repair guy come out and fix it for free. Two weeks later we woke up to the house at 50 degrees. Another repair call and he said the problem was with the installation from the two PVC exhaust pipes. They made some modifications and the furnace started kicking again. I'll spare you the rest but eventually we got to the bottom of the noise and it ended up being the motor that needed replacement. All of this was covered by Four Seasons. Every year since then we have paid $80 a year for a cleaning and with the exception of one incident two years ago where a part needed replacement, its been running like a charm. Our utility bills have lowered, which is a positive. One other thing that is a minor annoyance is that if they run the intake/outtake pipes out the back of your house, you are going to hear them if you sit outside when its running.

This is a very, very nice furnace but it really needs to be set up right.
One thing that Trane has issued a TSB to dealers on is the incoming fresh combustion air pipe. If its terminated on the top of the furnace it should be moved. I'll spare you the details but it has to do with summertime condensation dripping on the burners. If the fresh air comes in the side you're golden.

Pretty much everyone that's used four seasons ends up with some kind of horror story. They're a terrible operation.

LOL there is one pipe on the top and one on the side. Which is which? The one on the side points down outside if that helps.

Buy one of these. https://www.ebay.com/itm/151898432422

They are the same as Carriers with a different nameplate attached.

Had a high efficiency for 12 years and never had a single issue with it.

The pipe on the top is the intake. If you open the front of the unit you'll likely see the other one connected to a motor. That's the exhaust. The pipe on the top probably just terminates above the burner box. The issue is that in summer it tends to bring in hot humid air which condenses and drips onto the burner box and then drips onto the burners which rusts the wings of the burners preventing the carryover of flame from ignitor to flame sensor.
It's been a bit of a thing over the last couple years. It's a new design only like 3 years old. A little unexpected consequence. The manuals were updated a few months back.

Our high bid was a Lennox from Costco/4 Seasons. Normally I am a BIG FAN of Costco but the tri of high cost + bad rep of both Lennox and 4 Seasons kept me looking.

Thanks, should I call them up and complain about that? Or wait and see if something happens? It does have a 1/10 warranty.

Not surprised. I had to go through five of their repair people to get "their best guy" to diagnose the blower issue.

I think I've mentioned this before, but one year of one their guys came to clean the furnace and when he was done, he said he REALLY needed to use our bathroom. Begrudgingly, I said yes. He was making groaning sounds the whole time and pissed all over our seat. Used an entire bottle of bleach to clean it.

I have a Lennox. Fuck my Lennox. It works "most" of the time but the electrical board does some weird shit and I can see from the maintenance records that its been replaced twice in its 20 year lifetime.

Its an IGM replacement ignition board. It seems like it gets itself out of sequence every once and a while but eventually gets straightened out. It almost ignites immediately after the first tick of the flame sensor starts, then the fan goes on and then it shuts down and starts all over again. Normal for this unit is for the flame sensor to take an eternity, fan starts and then just before it wants to give up and shut down it will finally fire. I cant' wait to get a new one someday.

Darko - at in laws beach house, fired up the furnace (electric) for the first time. Blowing icicles, any thoughts for a guy who can barely turn a wrench?

Need details. What kind of furnace bla bla bla
Sit in front of the furnace and write down exactly what happens when someone turns on the heat.
Is there a motor that runs before the fan comes on and blows icicles? Is there an orange glow in the burner area?
Any clicks?
Does the fan come on straight away?

That was going to be my next question; if the length of piping matters. It is 20 feet. And the only condensation I can recall seeing in the basement comes from one of the water lines. But I will watch it closely. Thanks for the info and I owe you a beer or three.

Darko - at in laws beach house, fired up the furnace (electric) for the first time. Blowing icicles, any thoughts for a guy who can barely turn a wrench?

Will be willing to answer questions if you need more info.

Ok, I have no knowledge so I will try. When we turn on the heat from the thermostat unit comes on right away - throwing cold air. I do not know what make of furnace this is, but I believe it is ancient. I took off a cover panel and turned it on. There is a “hamster wheel” in there that definitely spins. However, what I can only assume is the burner (heating coils? - a teepe shaped grated coil below the hamster wheel?) does not appear to be throwing off any heat.

Sorry about the pathetic details, we will probably call a tech out this afternoon or tomorrow but if you have any suggestions fire away.

I'd suggest you get someone out there.
However if the blower motor comes on as soon as theres a call for heat that tends to be a limit fault. Do you guys ever change the filter?

Many that is true, but an incomplete statement.
