Darko - at in laws beach house, fired up the furnace (electric) for the first time. Blowing icicles, any thoughts for a guy who can barely turn a wrench?

Will be willing to answer questions if you need more info.

Need details. What kind of furnace bla bla bla
Sit in front of the furnace and write down exactly what happens when someone turns on the heat.
Is there a motor that runs before the fan comes on and blows icicles? Is there an orange glow in the burner area?
Any clicks?
Does the fan come on straight away?

Ok, I have no knowledge so I will try. When we turn on the heat from the thermostat unit comes on right away - throwing cold air. I do not know what make of furnace this is, but I believe it is ancient. I took off a cover panel and turned it on. There is a “hamster wheel” in there that definitely spins. However, what I can only assume is the burner (heating coils? - a teepe shaped grated coil below the hamster wheel?) does not appear to be throwing off any heat.

Sorry about the pathetic details, we will probably call a tech out this afternoon or tomorrow but if you have any suggestions fire away.

I'd suggest you get someone out there.
However if the blower motor comes on as soon as theres a call for heat that tends to be a limit fault. Do you guys ever change the filter?

I believe my father in law has it serviced annually - stress believe - so I would assume that is part of the service.

Having a debate with someome..is it true you are better off with the cheap furnace filters (3-5 bucks) vs the "high efficiency" ones ($20+)? I've always been told the cheap ones are actually better for your furnace.

I always had been told that and followed it. Buy cheaper and change frequently. That is until I had three dogs in the combined family. The dust/hair overload was nuts.

Cheap filters. All damn day.
3M filters fuck up air flow. Air flow is the most crucial component to heating and cooling.
Basically furnace filters are only there for protecting the furnace. From tree trunks and bowling balls. There isnt a furnace designed to accommodate a filter intended to improve indoor air quality.
Depending on why you feel you need expensive filtration, for the most part, cheap mechanical filtration and expensive purification typically is the proper solution.

Tldr cheap filters are better.

Darko, I thought I remember you recommended against the dirt cheap 79/99 cent green/blue filters, and opt for the $3 or $4 ninety day filters yeah?

Yeah kind of. There is a super cheap brand of filters that come in a bag and are super flimsy. They tend to be green fiberglass. Avoid those. Too cheap. Any cheap filter with the nice 1 inch frame is what I'm talking about

These are the ones I referred to that I stopped using. I am not in what Frank calls the $4 range.

Flame rollback sensor keeps tripping. Replaced sensor. Same thing. Touch burner box where sensor sits... HOT. I predict, flu has a bird's nest in it.

Arent the original purpose of the 1" filter is to prevent debris large enough to damage or block squirrel cage from entering the fan housing?

If you want to actually filter the air, you need at least a 2" or wider filter with a Merv 8 or higher rating. A Merv 11 or whatever filter at 1" is basically just a plug after a couple days...

80, and doesn't even have a name. It's a made-for-whatever subdivision complex at the time thing... It's box with a bunch of no brand chinese parts in it. Even trying to cross reference parts numbers on the parts themselves with anything else is almost impossible. It's truly a piece of shit.. but in this case imo it's gotta be a blocked flu. It works, but after a min the burner box gets hot and trips the rollout.

Flue... flue!
Anyway typically a rollout is a bad heat exchanger. Blocked flues trip BVSS safeties. (Blocked Vent Safety Switches.)

on a side note darkcyde, i fixed my garage wall heater. the pilot wouldnt stay on. i tried cleaning the oriface but it didnt help. the damn valve kept shutting off even though the pilot was directly blowing the thermocouple. so then i took some 220grit sand paper and shined up the probe and that fixed it.
