This is not sustainable. They can't keep winning games when giving up 40+ shots.

It's weird, because the obvious thing is to say they need a devoted stay-at-home defenseman, but who is a devoted stay-at-home defenseman anymore? Hjalmarsson is on the shelf, Marc-Edouard Vlasic is at the end, and Slavin could never be pried away from the Hurricanes. Few teams are as much of a Chinese fire drill as the Hawks are, but I don't think anyone has a true lockdown D anymore, either. (And no, not Carolina, they've been getting their dicks sucked for years but it was only the second half of last year when they stopped giving up a ton of goals.) Guess we just gotta ride the stupid train wherever it takes us.

Halfway through the first, slow going against the Sabres.

Not a bad first. Dach with a nice one and a few other good scoring opportunities.

I feel competing with Lehner has elevated Crow's play

Really like how Dach fits with the team, glad they didn't ship him out as he wasn't going to learn anything else in the WHL. Agree with the Lehner/Crow thoughts.

Meanwhile, Dach top-shelfed it for his second of the night.

Kaner makes it 3-0 on the Power Play, now all that's left is to see if Crow can...well you know...

They are putting a nice little string together here. Goal tending is right on and the young nucleus is contributing. Much more optimism for this guy.

After a dog shit start to the season, this team now stands 1 point out of a playoff spot (behind Calgary for WC2) with 2 games in hand.

With Lehner-Crow in net, I like this team's chances.

Better goal differential than 1st place Blues

More of an indictment of Central's mediocre blobness

Kirby Dach should be a nice player.

BUT

Bowen Byram was still the pick. Colorado sent him down for seasoning this season, but he could easily be playing for the Hawks right now. 14pts in 18 games as a defenseman in the whl so far. Dach has 6pts for the Hawks.

Guess I better retract this statement for the foreseeable future.

Here's the rookie scoring race if anyone's interested. A defenseman in the lead will be something to keep an eye on for sure.

What makes this stretch even better is that they are doing it against teams that will most certainly be in the playoffs. This isn't beating up on the Wild and Senators.

Nylander is right there with Dach...which is nice. Noticed that all the players ahead of Dach have played at least 5 and as many as 8 games more than him.

Dach also didn't get a training camp or preseason

Chicago opted to send Boqvist down because he’s the only waiver-exempt defensemen on the NHL roster. The Blackhawks will use the first year of his three-year entry-level contract if Boqvist is called up again and plays in four NHL games otherwise his contract will slide to the 2020-21 season. He scored his first professional goal with Rockford the night before he was called up in his sixth AHL contest of the season.

Will we see Boqvist again this season?

I would hope not. Best to let him slide another year on the ELC. If we do see him, let it be just to use up those 4 games at the end of the year.

Boqvist will be an 82 game player next year when Gus is off the team.

I don't like talking about playoff chances and slide risks in the same year. If he makes the team better, call him back up.

One scenario I like is if Gus ends up giving himself some trade value, he gets dealt and we ride with Boqvist. Better to get something for a liability when you can. Especially since I view Boqvist as an upgrade today.

Besides, if this team is in the playoffs, I don't want Erik Guspoli anywhere on the ice.

I agree with that, but what are you getting for a guy who's underperforming on an expiring contract?

Having him not on the playoff roster is enough for me in return. I don't want Game 7 in St. Louis to repeat.

I agree. The only problem is if he builds up his value the Hawks might decide to just keep him for the season. This is why I wanted him traded last offseason when his value was at its highest. At least his salary is so low that any team could fit him under the cap. A 2nd rounder or a B-level prospect is the most you’ll get for him unless his game starts to mirror what we saw from him last season.

I think the pick is far more valuable for the salary he might command.
