Good lord.

Half of it was viral marketing, half of it was idiots who did the work for free, like when HuffPost wrote those articles about how you need to see Lady Ghostbusters multiple times to own the incels.

It's an update of the old William Castle hype machine, where he would have nurses on site "in case people who had heart attacks" or offer life insurance policies because people would die from fright. We're too sophisticated for that now, but we're not too sophisticated to be told that a movie is so dangerous that we can't see it precisely so that we'll go see it. Gotta find out for yourself if you'll really have a heart attack right then and there in the theater, or get shot up by an incel driven to Joker Madness, see what all this hype is all about, live on the edge. I'm not saying every Hot Joker Take was marketing, lots of them were just the earnest work of very stupid people, but enough to get the conversation going. And now the movie made about half a billion against a fraction of what it would normally cost to make a superhero movie and no one got shot up.

But I’d say most of the Joker takes were honest to God over woke types trying to warn others of the incel threat.

Yeah a lot of the takes were fueled by that but still the original concept was the free marketing that Curios mentioned. It of course would take a life of its own. It was genius and a bit transparent imho.

How much does this movie make if it is not named Joker, even with all the sub rosa marketing?

It would have taken almost no writing subtractions to make this a non comic book movie, that nobody would have watched.

The comic book dispshits are conditioned to watch anything comic. What was the last one that absolutely failed?

This would of been one of those Indy movies that made like $500,000.

This is what it would of been comparable to, if not for the Joker name:

Joaquin Phoenix doing an admirable job in a obvious King of Taxi Drivers rewrite, sans-Joker, probably would have been seen as mediocre Oscar-baiting, it breaks even, no one sounds the alarms on incel rage, and some alt-weekly critics gripe that even at our best all we can do nowadays is rewrite Scorsese movies.

They had to search both deep and wide to come up with that list. I think it more supports my point.

Disney Marvel has had a great run.

I think the success of the MCU despite their films not always being great supports your point more.

Every other studio has had a good number of comic movie turds.

No one would care if it wasn’t the Joker. It absolutely prayed off the comic genre and the fact that Heath Ledger sky rocketed the “character” of the Joker. I mean he died for the role so it is edgy. Jared Leto went people dead rats or something like that blah blah blah.

It is Kanye West marketing... anything to get you taking about it. Does Ozzy have as much main stream relevance if he isn’t in the news for a being a “Devil Worshipper” and making kids kill themselves? The backlash makes them more known and helps the bottom line. Usually it works, sometimes it fails (Mel Gibson).

Isn't that how most movies work though? People go to see stories they are familiar with, or actors they are familiar with, or directors they are familiar with.

Pretty much all successful movies rely on some degree of familiarity to get the attention needed. That's why actors and directors get big money instead of just randomly casting some guy from the local theater company.

I thought it was an interesting take on the characters history.

Ya, it is amazing when you don't follow the formula and actually make a decent movie. For me Joker was a one and done, probably not gonna watch it again. But like a Venom will get multiple watches.

Yeah I know how you feel.

Something a little more lighthearted like Thor Ragnarok will get a dozen more viewings before I go back to something this heavy.

Well... Joaquin was pushing for it. He’s a big reason it’s happening.

I wonder what they’ll do with Bruce Wayne’s character.

Prolly the best scene I’ve seen in 2019 so far.

At least until 1917 is released.

Spoilers obviously.

Finally saw it this morning. I really thought it was superb. Didn't read any spoilers or anything about it. Great job acting and I like how it was tied back to the Bruce Wayne story at the end. It works as a stand alone or as an opener to one or more movies. The Joker is just such an interesting character

Is he? I found Joker to be the same-o same-o. Abused and bullied. There is nothing unique, nevermind entertaining.
