What an odd movie. I'm invested as I used to work for PBS and sit through many a Mister Rogers Pledge Drive Marathon in college along with watching the show religiously as a child.

Even as a college-age student, I found the program soothing. Stressed out from a class, I could watch the show and feel that some of the things I worried about were not permanent - and it made them less stressful. It was like a magic trick through the TV.

This movie is a crazy juxtaposition of storytelling that captures that same idea. It's a weird movie but I think it works.

I never did this but can see how it would work. Wouldn't necessarily be a bad idea for me to check it out at my current age.

As a kid, I found this Rogers guy feminine and creepy. Tom and Jerry was more my speed

As a cynical young person, and why wouldn't I be with the celebrities of the time and being in the Catholic church, I thought he was what you would think he was and it would all come crashing down.

But, he was the real deal. And how powerful is that? Gives you faith in humanity.

I’m glad that guy didn’t have a show called Mister Rodgers Neighborhood - that could have been traumatic for children or potentially educational.

My parents said I hated Mr. Rogers from the getgo. I'd get up and walk over and turn the TV off, at 1.5-2 years old. My earliest memories of him were in elementary school and I though he was odd and never watched. Ray Rayner or baseball games were my thing.

So even if I watched movies, which I stopped doing about 10 years ago, I'd be passing on this one.

Yeah the fact that he was the real deal is awesome. A great man. I don’t think it was a favorite as a child but as I grew older and found out about the dude I became really impressed with him as a man.

My wife and I saw the Fred Rodgers documentary a few years ago. Should be required watching for any parent of young kids, or any kids at all. His respect for children as complex individuals is incredible. In some of my most challenging situations as a parent of young kids I try to remember his words from that documentary that children are humans with emotions, feelings, and desires that are every bit as valid as adults.

I am a better parent for having watched that documentary.

Besides the crazy haired happy little trees painter dude, only PBS recall watching on the regular was Jeremy Brett's 'Sherlock Holmes'.

didn't they figure out that PBS's children's programming from back in the day was falling on deaf eyes w/r/t communicating anything to kids. Might've been a Malcolm Gladwell thing. Kids like simple, predictable, repetitive programming, according to the research. So they developed Blue's Clues and Telly-Tubbies and Ren-n-Stimpy.

Unfortunately, I think you are correct. When the marathon pledge drive weeks came they went to Barney & Friends instead of Mister Rogers.

I should have gotten hazard pay to be forced to sit and listen/watch Barney for 12 hours straight for $4.25/hour. But there was all the Taco Bell you could eat. Is that good?

I wouldn't wish Barney on my worst enemy.

It is weird when there are so many experts, books, opinions, philosophy trends that it is pretty simple. Really listen to children, value and take seriously what they say about how they feel and pretty much be a kind person. So simple. I imagine most try the last part aside from board bullshitting.

It's unsettling how easily other stuff gets in the way of that....for me, at least.

Rodgers gave me the creeps with the way he talked. No one in the world talked like him. My kids didn't like him though they really didn't watch a lot of tv growing up.

This is a poster who logged in on Thanksgiving to talk shit about Mr. Rodgers.

That should tell you all you need to know about “the Hawk”.

Fuck Mr Rogers. I've seen better production values in Elementary school gyms.

Mr Robinson's Neighborhood? I'd have watched that.

Not what I expected but it was a very good movie. More kids today need to learn the things Fred was preaching back in the day.

Quite a few people on this board need to think about what they do with the mad they feel.
