Stephen King is overrated.
He has great ideas but can' finish a novel (interestingly, he writes a good short story).
The Stand - great idea but in the end good does nothing to win. If the good side wasn't in the story, it would have still happened the same way
The Dark Tower - 4000+ pages to get to the first sentence again (as an aside, the best thing he ever wrote is Dark Tower 4: Wizard and Glass, the worst thing other than the ending: Stephen King is a character in the series.)

I could go on as I always am told, but you need to read _____. I do because I read a lot and he starts strong but falls apart by the end.

Amen.

yep. I'm old...old and aware enough to know that I have no clue on pop culture outside of the goofy shit I see my kids do.

The only pop culture comment with any relevance here is the knock on bushy beards by crack-ee.....and to this....I agree.

As far as long hair is concerned.....at age 47 I still have hair and I grew it long well before that became trendy. Funny how it's been long for enough years I don't have to hear the midlife crisis comments.

For someone who did the female voice to his sock puppet, Mr. Rodgers was kind of creepy and no role model for young children.

He's exactly the kind of person the Catholic Church would elect as Pope, however.

Couldnt that be said about most big singers/bands
I think it's true for a lot to be sure but they aren't placed on the very top of music history like The Beatles.

Nobody from the Backstreet Boys or One Direction has the ability to go from bubble gum pop to making albums like Abbey Road or The White Album.

Not even the worst Beatles song. Definitely in the team picture, though.

Why not?

The idea now is that no one today is as good as The Beatles and there isn't a person in the world capable of creating an album like Abbey Road or The White Album including the remaining living Beatles.

Doesn't that indicate it is much more likely that it was simply the evolution of music at the time rather than some sort of unique talent that otherwise wouldn't have existed?

It's like the question of what would have happened if Mark Zuckerberg had decided to become a dentist instead of go into tech. Would social networking exist? Did he alone have the ability to create it or would it have been done regardless and he was also in the right place at the right time?

I didn't say that there is nobody in the world capable of putting out an album like Abbey Road. You did.

What I did say was that nobody from the bands you listed has the talent to put out such an album. If they did, said album would have already been made.

Whether true greatness, luck or timing the Beatles are where they are on the list and that is at the top. It is very incredible though how rock music changed since they popped up and how quickly. And the many bands right along side of them certainly all added in. I cannot think of a crazier period in music where it changed some dramatically as then, 1963-69 or so.

It's in the team photo. Probably not top 5 or top 10, but likely in the top 50 and definitely in the top 100 of all time.

Way higher than anything One Direction has done.

Maybe if you cut the fat from it. And then it only makes a top 100 cut because Jann Wenner says so.

I've said it before. I can respect the work George Martin brought to the table as producer. But save for maybe 10 songs from their entire catalog, the Beatles music is shit.

I answered that in the rest of my post.

These are the dates of release of Rolling Stone's top 10 albums of all time.
1968
1966
1980
1972
1971
1965
1965
1966
1966
1967

So basically, in the last 40 years, every musician that has ever made an album has failed to come close to about 5 Beatles albums, including the former members of The Beatles.

If you get rid of the 1980 album by The Clash, it basically means that the best albums in history were all made in a 7 year period ending in 1972.

Is the idea here that if The Beatles happened to be formed in 1990 that they would have put 5 albums on that list? I just can't see it unless the idea is that something happened with people after 1972 that made it impossible to create great albums.

But that doesn't mean you don't recognize the talent and influence. Rush's music is nails on a fucking chalkboard to me, but I can still respect them as great musicians who were better songwriters than anybody in any boy band ever.

I just want to know how all of a sudden Mister Rogers became an icon. Did he, or did he not, kinda suck? I don't know anybody who watched it. Everybody is aware of the show, maybe mocked it, but no one actually watched it with any semblance of regularity.

I definitely watched it in that 3-5 age range. It was either that or soap operas.

This provides substantial proof that the opinions of Rolling Stone (Jann Wenner) are complete boomer drivel.

This is going back a stretch, but I think I remember that when Mr. Rogers came on, da fun was ovah. Like, The Electric Company and Sesame Street were cool, but Mr. R, as cool a person as he is, didn't do much for me.

It was the kind of letdown you had on Saturday mornings when the cartoons gave way to a nature show which gave way to golf. (Or waking up on Sunday morning only to find Gigglesnort Hotel and that Jewish show about the magic mushrooms.) Seeing the nature show beginning was like waking up on the day after Christmas. Just a letdown, a buzzkill. That's what Mr. Rogers felt like.

But I respect the hell out of the guy now.

Here's a good take:

The Electric Company > Sesame Street
