What part of spending 2nd and 4th of all of MLB is crying poor? They're not. They're spending and have spent. Theo fucked up spending with bad contracts.

If you would like to see a real version of crying poor, please see the White Sox, A's, Rays, Marlins, Pirates, Royals, Orioles. All of them are going into 2020 with a payroll HALF of the cubs.....HALF!!! There is nothing about the Cubs payroll are minor league operations that cry poor. I'm by no means a Ricketts apologist....I think they're douches. Fact is they're telling Theo "We gave you everything you needed in terms of resources and money....you created this mess, now fix it."

It's no coincidence that they've invested money in batting/pitching technologies, etc. to try to get the player development pipeline going again in addition to "moving" Jason McLeod out of that side of the business.

If they wanted to extend Bryant and Baez, they could.

Why is so difficult to understand no one wants to pay the luxury tax. Red Sox can afford Price , Betts, etc. but don't want to pay the tax. Astros could afford Cole wouldn't pay him and over the next year they'll dump one or two more of their top players. Quit being a liberal meatball acting like the Ricketts are doing things no one else is.

You're just hoping the Cubs sign that Japanese outfielder. You can post your MANY Asian slurs.

Some good news. Jesse reports Rizzo wanted extension Cubs weren't interested. Let's not overpay first basemen like the Sox did with Abreu.

They're spending plenty of money on the field. There is plenty to be angry about....how much they're spending is NOT it.

Exactly. How they are spending is the problem not how much.

This distinction is meaningless though isn't it?

At the end of the day, they aren't putting out a good enough team. Whether the spending is dumb or just not enough doesn't matter

No it's not meaningless. Theo no longer has an open checkbook due to his own giant FA signing whiffs. Now he has to start trading assets. It's not really surprising.

An open checkbook isn't needed. They're SPENDING plenty. Be pissed all you want...that's fine. The team on the field is trending downward, but be pissed about the General Managing, not the Ricketts checkbook.

I'm starting to think that the Bryant thing rides itself out. Regardless of the Cubs, Dodgers, Angels, or any team.....Bryant will hold on a long term deal until he's a Free Agent. I don't see a team wanting to give up the haul for a 2 year player that year to year ties up a good chunk of money.

I'm not pissed. My point was this should not be a surprise. Theo created this mess and he can't spend his way out of it.

Yep...hard to ask Ricketts for more money when you've pissed away hundreds of millions on Heyward, Darvish, Chatwood, Morrow, Kimbrel, etc. Even if Ricketts wanted to keeping spending, would Theo be the guy you trust with more FA signings?

How is this good news? So Theo spends for Darvish, Heyward, Chatwood, Kimbrel, but can't find a way to sign Rizzo and Bryant?

By crying poor, I mean they have told everyone they aren't spending any money on free agents until they move salary. Yes there is a luxury tax, but that is nominal. The fact that all these franchises are staying under it (or endeavoring to do so) speaks to the business aspect of it, but we as fans could care less about these billionaires. We just want to win.

Instead of crying about having to move salary, why not cough up the cash to get Stasburg or Cole or even Wheeler to fortify the pitching staff? Instead they put out this cover story about being strapped for cash. Give me a fucking break.

I did however preface my comments by saying Ricketts may also be saying that he is sick of not seeing the player development side of the business bear fruit and so he tells Theo you are capped out.

However you want to spin it, Ricketts has cut off the cash and now we have to chase 31 YO Japanese OF's who MAY be decent and let top talent go elsewhere.

Sad.

And if Theo leaves in 2 years, he better take that clown Jed with him. Let's get someone in here who can build a real organization by developing talent, shrewdly investing in free agents and hiring managers who aren't yes men like Ross.

Exactly how much would you say "dick" is worth? Because they are in the top 4 in spending. Now whether that translates to winning or if the monies have been allocated correctly is a different matter.

Exactly.. According to FF the Cubs are now being run like Reinsdorphs cheap fucking ass. Their payroll will dwarph the Sox payroll, and will continue to do so. Getting under the luxury tax is a wise move. They may be over it again next year.. if not next year, the year after that no doubt.

Tendon to Anaheim, now it's time to move KB. Let's go Atlanta, make a move.

Human nature is something else. Now there are people crying about trading Bryant. WTF? If they get at least 3 PREMIUM prospects at positions of need AND then reallocate that money, then let's get it done.

Bryant is good but expendable esp. given his greed. He is not a guy I'd pay 240M at 30 AVV.

So you are in favor of him getting 8/240 at minimum?? Given they've stated they can't afford Baez, Rizzo and Bryant, plus the Schwarber, Contreras contracts long term, what's your plan??

And Rendon got 7/245 which is a 35 AVV so 30M for Bryant probably is not happening...

Trade Contreras, let Rizzo walk after 2 more years, sign Baez and Bryant. Lester and Rizzo expire after 2021. That's roughly 40 million off the books.

If they can get two of the Braves' top three pitching prospects, and Inciarte to play CF, I think Theo has to do the deal. There's no way that Bryant re-signs in Chicago especially since he will expect 8/255. And as constructed, the Cubs are not a legitimate WS contender.

They need two young starters who can at least fill the #4/#5 slots this year and have the upside to be #3/#4 in 2021 behind Darvish and Hendricks. And they need as little association with Scott Boras as possible.

What does his "greed" have to do with anything?

Rendon was a free agent, Bryant is not. That will factor into whatever deal he gets.

Boras wants him to get paid for that extra year of control. Good luck to him. Both sides are simply playing the hand they've been dealt based on the current rules of the game. Greed doesn't really factor into anything.
