Nice. Looking forward to seeing it. It will probably be terrible...but Top Gun is one of my favorite movies from the 80s. Every time I see it on I have to watch it.

It would be hard to be worse than Back Draft 2. Watching that last week was depressing.

Yeah, that movie was terrible. Good thing it was a rental and not a theater visit.

I read that there is hardly any CGI and that Cruise learned to fly a jet.
I'm not kidding.
I never saw the original, but this looks petty summer popcorn-y. Any movie with Jennifer Connelly is a good start.

Well, that's encouraging. Jennifer Connelly in her prime was HOF hot.

Sounds like the Top Gun Academy needs to have its accreditation pulled.

Concur they need to lose their accreditation.

I mean who the hell gives its pilots something as awesome as an F-14 with the AIM-54 and then tells them to go WVR when the F-14 was built to excel at BVR. If the final dogfight of Top Gun happened in the real world in the 1980s, Maverick would take off, fly within 60 miles of the MiGs and then pick off 6 Phoenix missiles at the 6 separate MiGs. The entire F-14 was designed around that missile. You *can* dog fight with one, but that's not playing to its strengths.

I was more of a F4 fan. That could dogfight, even as heavy as she was she could match the 17s and 21s thrown at them. Carried AIM9 and AIM 7s, back when missiles required skill. Course once they added the m61 it bnb was showtime.
Oh and Duke Cunningham and William Driscoll were heros of mine back in HS, did a 20 page research paper on them. Killed a legend they did. Their 5th kill. Rumor says that dude shot down 13. Colonel Tomb! Flew a 17 and imagine that dogfight had he been in a 21.
Anyway. Top gun 2 will blow.

Just read the director has Oblivion, Tron Legacy, and Only the Brave on his filmography.

That is very encouraging.

How many enemy planes do you think the USAF pilots have shot down in the last 40 years? I'm guessing not many.

Didn't Maverick shoot down two planes in Top Gun alone?

So he's only supposed to have shot down one additional plane in the ensuing three decades?

Not exactly the stuff of legend.

I used to play the Top gun Nintendo game. The air fuel thing was hard. Then the desert, and water, and grey background. I never made it to the landing sequence.

He shot down 3 in the film and Iceman shot down 1.

The Navy was always smarter to keep the cannon on the Phantom. I never understood why the USAF never used it.

Maverick had some character traits that were reportedly inspired by Duke Cunningham. It's no accident that they refer to Maverick's father as "Duke" Mitchell.

I got excited seeing the new trailer. I will watch it eventually. It made me look up why they are using older planes though. I guess it would be harder to have a movie with F35Cs due to one man cockpits and longer range fighting style rather than dogfights. The Super Hornets will be cool be feel dated.
