The thing is that Y2K was fixed because of the panic and the huge money spent on it. It was known about for years prior and patched in any vital system well before it would have been an issue. It did make for a great media story which kept it in the news all the way up to the day.
I don't know about that...I remember reading that Italy basically said fuck it and didn't spend a single lira...and came out of it ok.
Italy just started really late but they worked for months fixing it too for the vital systems.
They didn't care as much about incorrect payroll dates and some atms failing and they just dealt with it after.
