This is funny to me - I am currently going through this with my 18-year old son. This EXACT conversation. He has an email account but he never checks it or maintains it, and now he is doing all kinds of college admission stuff, and I have been telling him to keep an eye on his email account and he keeps coming back at me with this same bullshit argument that people his age dont use email blah blah blah. I explained to him that I can't remember the last time I sat and wrote a letter and put it in the mail, but I still check my mailbox for bills and important mail, I dont just ignore it because I dont write or receive letters. It is ridiculous. God only knows what kind of offers or info he is missing by not at least doing some basic email maintenance.

Quote:
If students aren’t in the habit of sifting through their clogged accounts, they could be missing looming deadlines, to-do notices to complete their applications and announcements about financial aid, scholarships and awards.

“There has to be things that are falling through the cracks,” said Carly Oishi, director of financial capability for Ladder Up, a Chicago organization that provides financial advice. “If you’re applying to 10, 15, 20 schools, there’s no way that you’re going to get everything in, review every single thing, sign every single thing on time. There’s probably money being missed out on, applicants not being admitted, that kind of thing.”

Fitzgerald experienced that. She said she missed a deadline to apply for a scholarship because she did not see the email in time. It took several emails for her to realize that she’d been accepted into one of her top schools, Loyola University Chicago.

“I get distracted and I keep pressing delete, delete, delete,” Fitzgerald said. “Just last week, I got an email about financial aid and I deleted it because I wasn’t paying attention. But my mom also gets the emails and she asked me about it.”

This dynamic can be confounding for adults because teenagers typically are nimble with technology. But some say email aversion has less to do with mastering the mechanics of it and more to do with learning executive functioning skills they need for college and beyond.

I agree with the bolded part.

Good luck to Amber with keeping up with her schoolwork in college. Hopefully they treat them like the adults they are supposed to be and not like helpless toddlers.

Can The Wisemen just add a "These Kids Today With Their Tik Toks and Their Snap Chats" section, so we can keep all this stuff together?

I think that's Burl Ives, but the same question applies.

And on the other end of the spectrum, I work with old farts who like to say "I'm old school, I don't use email" like that's an acceptable excuse in 2019 for missing important work emails.

So I have an unpopular opinion about this:

Email sucks and needs to be replaced. It served its purpose for a long time and served it well, but there are better platforms now and corporate/school/government communication models need to catch up.

Forward looking companies have already replaced email with slack and Yammer. There are other programs on the way/in beta phase. I sympathize with high school kids and younger because their world just doesn't include email, so maybe for us an example would be like being forced to use a fax machine to communicate when I've been using email my whole life. I imagine that's what it feels like for them - they communicate using far more efficient platforms so why are they forced to master dinosaur technology when they currently use much better tech.

I signed up for NextDoor earlier this year. It's basically facebook, but you only get to see people who post stuff from your area. That place is littered with old farts who have zero concept of how the internet or computers. Comments are made completely off-topic, people post about how they can't find their previous post, and other insane ramblings. It's like Bigfan created a couple hundred mults in my neighborhood.

If you're not on NextDoor, I would highly recommend it. It's sometimes more entertaining than this message board.

I didn't write or mail letters in high school but I still found a way to check the mail when I was applying for colleges.

That's every bit as stupid and depending what they missed/fucked up I'd think that would be grounds for termination.

How old are they?

One of my staff is 70 and has no problem with email or texting.

Email (virtual) is not the same as postage mail (physical). Not an apples to apples comparison.

Right. All due respect vegan but that's a load of horseshit. You're trying to make it sound like checking your email is some arduous task.

Correct in that it's even easier and takes even less effort to check email

yep, my kids use email only when absolutely necessary. they hate it and don't use it.

In terms of family and social communication, I don't have an issue, but in terms of school and preparing for life after school...they need to get the fuck over it. IM tools are great at work and have replaced a lot of email, but often a paper trail is needed. For reference, and to cover your ass....they're gonna have to get over it fairly soon.

It's less about the functionality and more about mindset. Personal example but might be maybe 70% reflective of what the HS'ers are going through:

I have about say seven apps I regularly use to communicate, all of which are either IM-based or social media. 100% of my communication between friends and family takes place on those apps. My personal email - which I used to use every second back in like 2005 - is largely defunct. I never use it except to read the occasional forward or when I'm networking/looking for a job. One time my old boss emailed me to let me know she's in town and wanted to grab coffee. She emailed me two weeks in advance. She followed up. I never saw it until like the day before she wanted to meet.

I think that's what HS'ers are going through - all their friends and family are using one or two or three of the like 12 comms apps they have on their phones. It's easy to forget email because 1) it's not one of those go-to 12 apps and 2) no one uses it. So it gets lost in the shuffle and then you might forget your password because you don't use it at all so there's that crap and just generally it gets annoying. I'm not saying that it's hard to check email but at the very least there's a fair amount of behavior change the HS'ers have to go through to incorporate email into their day-to-day, and that because comms has so radically changed since the time we all were in HS - changed to a degree where email isn't even a thing for them - we should cut them some slack. Email is basically the fax machine of the 2010s.

Sounds like a successor to the old Topix forums. The people who used to out their neighbors' meth labs on Topix moved over to Facebook.

See, I find this a ridiculous thing to say, particularly the underlined part. What you posted is simply wrong. The only behavior they need to change is to check email occasionally, like maybe once a day. This is not a significant behavior change, nor should any slack be given to a teenager too lazy to do it for something as important as college admissions.

Also, as delany mentioned, email has specific purposes still that Slack can't cover. It's a pretty irresponsible business practice to send important documents and things of that nature just through Slack and not email.

It seems kind of strange to do anything drastically important over email though.

Why didn't you get into college X? Oh, I missed the email.

That's true but companies are building in the "audit trail" element and sooner or later legal will have to come up with stuff to accord non-email communication the same status that email has in court. You can't be a comms company trying to outdo email (like Slack) and not factor that into your platform and business model.
