Right, Skype or Slack is great for in house day to day communication email serves a different function. At least in my industry it would be insane to communicate and send documents to folks all around the country in that type of medium.

Anyone who says email is going obsolete within 10 years is simply ignorant of how it’s used in a variety of industries that aren’t going away.

These are the same kids who think the economy is stacked against them and everything is hopeless yet they cannot be fucked to learn how to use or even check their email. And there is a veritable army of grown adults (many in government, academia and media) who think this is everyone else's fault and that we need to be more accommodating to these entitled college students.

In my industry, everyone. Same with e-mail. I get at least 5 voice mails per day. I get at least 20 e-mails. This includes weekends.

Anyone who makes a statement like this has clearly never worked with the City of Chicago or the County of Cook on any sort of purchasing or supply chain issues. They still fax a lot of documents and require certain documents to be faxed in. Email for certain departments there would be the next step up, and they aren't going to go all email and then upgrade again within ten years.

FF is 100% correct. Email may be used less, but its completely not going away anytime soon.

I agree that it will never completely go away. I'm sure some people still use dial-up. I still have a land line. My point is that it will be replaced as a primary method of communication and will seem antiquated in the not too distant future.

I do not know of any teenager who uses Slack. Nor any school that does. We had to fax a NLI to a school this week. They wouldn't take an Emailed PDF.

Define not too distant future. Because to me, you're looking at this from a narrow perspective. Slack already has replaced email as a primary method of communication in house with fellow employees in many businesses, but it's not close to replacing email for outside communication primarily.

I've never even heard of Slack and the fact that I get 300 emails/day makes me feel like it is not going away in the near future.

We use Skype for Business but most people here don't even use it. I find it somewhat useful.

I think some people are taken what is needed to work internally being the same as dealing with the outside. I could see instant messaging being more efficient inside your job than email. However, that is not the same as dealing with people outside your office.

It's the latter. Reply to all, cc, etc make it too easy to drag out a "conversation". Perhaps the worst part is that you feel forced to respond to anything you are asked since it's in writing and the sender knows you've read it.

While this is true I find IM to be even more annoying since it interrupts you (often times repeatedly) and pretty much demands an instant response. At least an email can be ignored for a while.

Every person still has a phone number though. That's like saying computers went away because people primarily use laptops now.

Anything that "replaces" email will basically still be what email is. You will have a place where people can send you messages in a readable format that you don't have to immediately reply to with the ability to do things like include files or links.

However, if you do have a solid idea for what will make email obsolete in the next 10 years, can you send me a PM about it so I can become a billionaire?

No argument here. I really only need to get about 75 of those but I have to read all of them just in case since I don't know which 75 I need - many in a foreign language which is an additional time-waster.

I just don't see what could replace it.

The real issue is that we are always on the clock. The emails come 24/7 because I carry my email machine in my pocket every waking hour.
