Cotton picker.

Yep. You know what images that shit conjured up. They actually stuck a garden hoe in between my legs while I was picking weeds..
Not cotton picking but close enough.

I guess I mean what was the job you applied for ? Literally a field hand ?

I worked as a busboy at Roselli's, which was an Italian restaurant/stereotype factory at Higgins and Nagle when I was 13. 20 bucks flat plus tips per shift.

No, but it sounds like you may have been doing something with a young janitor.

I was often paid for working on the farm as a kid, but never a job- you were expected to help with the work because it was the family work, you weren't entitled to the pay. Grandpa would write me a check, call me into his office, where I would endorse the check and he would give me the cash. I think he needed the check as a receipt of labor paid.

I was 13 when I got my first paying job as crate handler/truck loader for neighbors' fruit farm- carried crates of fancy-packed strawberries and raspberries from the packing shed, installed lids and loaded them on the trucks. Kept the ladies in the packing shed stocked with quarts and crates. Most were the Grandmas from church, and they all loved me. I was paid $3.10 per hour, 0530 to when the work was done, but made so many connections that lasted most of their lives.

I replaced the farmer's nephew, who had the same role, probably since he had been 13. He grew to 6'4", 225lbs, All-State in HS football and basketball, went on to play college sports. I was 5'2", fat and soft, but hustled.

I was a waiter for a catering company. I actually liked the job even though I wouldn't ever want to do it as a career for many reasons.

Luckily, my parents didn't want me working while school was in session so it ended near the end of summer.

My first few jobs were at the Boys Club, the Country Club and then working in a Kennel at the Dog Track. I don't have a clue what I was paid.

Busing tables at the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Rockford Lodge. Smoking dope, skimming booze and bowling on the little 4 lane alley in between actual work. Good times.

Thought it was going to be detasseling job.

First job was a paint stripper. 10 bucks an hour, cash. Terrible fucking job with the chemicals and beat guns removing 8 layers of paint (some lead) from the interior and exterior of and old Elgin watch factory home. Lot of high school kids on the job and most didn’t last long. Great paying job for someone with limited expenses, my girlfriend’s mom would introduce me to her friends and tell them I was a stripper. I was 5 foot 11 and probably weighed a buck thirty.

First jobs were doing janitorial work at my dad's buildings. One time shoveling trash out of a shutdown garbage incinerator that had been shutdown before the apartment doors had been sealed. In the summer. I still often see the rat that jumped at me.

Non family, Christmas casual at the MPO Melrose Park(?) A supervisor had me unloading trucks in 10 below weather. Which I did until I got moved out because I was working too fast so I could get the hell back to heat.

I always remember that first job because the night before i went to Wisconsin i happened to be in IIT watching the Pro Am. I don't know if you remember but in the early days of IIT they'd allow the shorties (Many of the guys from the nearby buildings) to get our hoop on on the other side behind the office area. They had two full courts back there.

I just remember laying my Adidas jogging suit jacket down as we played. When i came back that boy was long gone.
I was mad as hell. Think one of the little thirsty dudes from Dearborns got me for it. All i could do was chalk it to the game.

That reminds me of going to OP-RF for an indoor track meet. We barely had uniforms (but almost won), but almost our entire team went home with a nice, like new team jacket.

Lets just say that if you got got on 47th street by a kid with a suburban track jacket in 1982, running away wasn't an option.

I think by the time I was 11 or so I picked up a job delivering the weekly "you oughta subscribe to the daily herald" paper that they'd spam all over the suburbs to try and get some readers. I was saving up for a Sega Genesis and had started off with $20 that I found on the street.

sometimes when I had extra papers I couldn't deliver for whatever reason I'd stuff them down into the sewers. I definitely remember that much.
