Seriously Sox fans. Is it a good idea to sink almost 30 million a year for Abreu and Encarnacion.

Absolutely. Abreu especially is worth every cent of his contract. Rbi leaders in the entire major leagues deserve that kind of money. He also hits for good average for a power hitter. Encarnacion makes what pure power hitters make. He's on a one year deal and will be a fill in until one of their rookies comes up to take his place on the team and in the line-up. As I see it, there are three legit guys in their present minor leagues that have the potential to do that in a couple of years.

Well between Encarnacion, Abreu and Grandal (on off days) that leaves basically zero time at designated hitter for Eloy. Less worried about the mediocre defense, more worried about the chance for injury.

White Sox may hold Luis Robert and Nick Madrigal down for service-time reasons, but when they are at full strength, this has the makings of an awfully good (and interchangeable) lineup:

Robert 8
Anderson 6
Abreu 3
Moncada 5
Encarnacion DH
Grandal 2
Jimenez 7
Mazara 9
Madrigal 4

It'll be:

Anderson SS
Moncada 3B
Abreu 1B
Grandal C
Jimenez LF
Encarnacion DH
Mazara RF
Robert CF
Mendick 2b

Good speed at the top and bottom of the order. Big time power in the middle of the line-up

I'd expect a reaction from the Twins before the end of the year. The Sox have caught up with them.

My best guess is Donaldson is going to Minneapolis.

Robert is the best player on the team and probably the best in the divison. He will be batting closer to third than eighth.

Hmm. Couldn't get Wheeler, huh? Just spent $27.5 on a 1B/DHs. Well, alrighty then.

Sox need someone who can play defense. They have a lineup loaded with bangers, but no speed or D. Great softball team.

Robert is fast. Anderson is fast. Mendick and Madrical are fast. Moncada is fast. All five guys can also steal bases. Mazara, Jimenez and Grandal are not plow horses. The only slow guys are Encarnacion and Abreu.

They needed a left handed starter like Keuchel more than Wheeler in my judgement. I think out of the group of Kopech, Cease, Dunning, and Lopez, one or two of them will be just peachy as starters. I still do not get your underestimation of Abreu, though. All star and Rbi leaders do not grow on trees.

Meatpants was suggesting Puig yesterday for 4th OF, on the condition that Abreu needs to feel that he could limit Puig's goofiness.

On a similar deal structure to Encarnacion, I could see pitching him an incentive laden deal to be with Abreu and the rest of the Cubans.

For sure. The ability to play both infield and outfield and hit pretty well makes him a very valuable player. Also, when Madrigal is ready, Mendick can also play any infield position and both corner outfield positions. He also will be a valuable player.

Signing Puig seems really dumb unless they aren't committed to Robert playing until mid year. Would have been better to sign a Will Smith or Betances than spend 11 million on Encarnacion. Bullpen still looks average.

This is dead wrong. Really shitty post, and totally missing the cause of the Sox woes throughout the last decade.

Betances threw eight pitches in 2019 and Will Smith signed for a whole lot more than $11m

And the Sox dont really have a glaring problem in the bullpen. Bummer and Colome are more than adequate and they've got more on the way. What they lack in minor league starters they more than make up for in prospective relievers knocking on the door. But really, the reason your post here is clueless goes beyond just that.

The Sox were so bad at DH and RF last year it cost them five wins. By replacing that void with anything, even the likes of Edwin Encarnacion and Nomar Mazara, the Sox figure to be something like seven wins improved in 2020. And they figure to get those seven wins at the cost of $11m and Steele Walker. I dont think any team in baseball got that much better overall while paying such a pittance.

Yet here you are complaining about what exactly? That the Sox didn't buy an $11m lottery ticket on Betanches instead? Or that they didn't blow the money it took to get Keuchel on a lefty reliever they dont really need?

If you want to complain for the sake of complaining just do that. Dont come in here with this garbage. What a low effort fucking retarded post you made. You should be ashamed.

The difference between now and the last time the Sox "won the off-season" is that now our eggs are not all in one basket. The farm system is headed by three real blue-chippers who are all ready (or very nearly ready) to contribute at the big league level. They have not had that type of reinforcement available to start a season.

But beyond that they still have a decent cadre of guys who are a long way from being worthless on the trade market. Collins, Basabe, Rutherford, Adolfo, Dunning etc. are worth more than you'd think, and if they get some decent starts the minor league season out of those guys they will easily be able to package and deal them for relievers.

They are well positioned. No real way around it. They did a good job.

Who’s gonna pitch ? This looks like a less accomplished version of the Red Sox lineups from the 80’s and 90’s.

The White Sox are already better than the fabled Cubs dynasty that was supposed to last a generation, and it’s pissing off a bunch of posters.

I suppose that may be technically correct. I'm not sure what a good or bad bullpen looks like on paper. It's the most difficult position to predict. And it is now the most important position.

Bummer should be fine. But I think it's very likely that Colome will not have as good a season as he did last year. And I really don't want to see guys like Vieira, Fulmer, or Jace Fucking Fry coming into a close game.

I would have liked them to do more with the bullpen. Maybe they will.

They've got plenty of speed. It would be very difficult to argue that this is anything but a high powered offense on paper. A lot would have to happen to stop them from scoring a shitload of runs.

Encarnacion is a 35 homer guy who doesn't strike out like most 35 homer guys. This is going to be a tough lineup for pitchers to deal with.

Those Red Sox teams never had any speed.
Haven't really watched much of the Sox over the past 3-4 years but by all accounts this team appears to be for real.

For the first time in a long time Sox fans have something to be excited about.

Definitely will watch this season. I hope they don't play around with Robert and Madrigal also. Let them start the season with the Major League team

I don't like the encarnacion sign, he's probably 40 years old. They should have offered Nick Castellanos a 4-82 million deal.

I always add on 2 years on any Latin American import. He'll be 37 in a few days, so probably 39.

It's the giving up fewer that matters most. Worried about this becoming, as Cashman said above, the softball team. We've seen that team before. It didn't work out.
