Since the Bears/Staleys weren't even around until three years later, no.

Sam Mendes though. Everything he does is overwrought.

The White Sox should be featured prominently.

I only like war movies where the americans swoop in to save the day.

This appears to be a WWI version of saving private ryan

Looks like like they may be going for Apocalypse Now on the Western Front. The Great War does have an eeriness about it, like it was influenced by something sinister and not of this world.

I flew to London specfiically to see They Shall Not Grow Old (that and the 100th anniversary of 11/11) so I have a big interest in this subject matter. Even the choice of 1917 says a lot about this film's potential direction. Whatever enthusiasm and optimisim there was the for the war was absolutely gone after the Somme and Verdun and this likely is set around the time of the doomed Neville Offensive which broke the back of the French Army and put the British basically in sole charge of holding the line. Of course it'll lack the proper respect to the French sacrifice (and German...) but whatever it looks like it at least has potential.

When you research WW1, and then watch this trailer the line we may lose 1,600 men doesn’t really hit like it should.

100s of thousands were being killed in a day.

The Germans were stout.

My guess is these two get here just in the knick of time to deliver the order and somehow circumstances on the ground have changed to where the unit in question must lead this doomed, heroic charge and given the choice the two messengers join in and the battalion achieves whatever its objective was against all odds.

Yeah, I think the last 30 seconds of the trailer confirms your theory.

I'm excited for it no doubt and I'll be willing to look past a lot of inaccuracies or silly Hollywood shit if they get the setpieces and mood right.

As for the "only 1600 men" thing, which I've seen all over the internet.

This is 1917, the French Army has almost quit the war because morale got so bad. These are all English soldiers, which means its some combination of the few hundred or so men of the professional British Army that were left and what remained of the Kitchener recruits. At this stage in the war the Entente powers were basically relying on ANZACs, South Africans, Canadians, Newfoundlanders and some contributions from the Raj in offensive operations. If you dont believe look at the casualties at Paaschendaele (this is clearly not set anywhere near Ypres), its not what you'd imagine. So at this point 1600 English soldiers meant a very great deal to Haig and the British High Command and probably would've been well worth sending a couple messengers for.

Anyone who sees this let us know.

It’s in select theaters now.

Wide release is January 10.

I’m very much looking forward to seeing this.

WW1 is one of the craziest, bloodiest wars ever.

I was wondering why I haven't seen it listed in theaters yet.

I’m sure it will be.

The early reviews are outstanding.

Any movie that has this kind of Oscar buzz will have a long run at the theaters.

In New Zealand too it should get a long run since the war plays a much larger role in their national psyche than it does in the USA. It doesn't look like its going to suck which is great, hopefully it leads to a little surge of interest in the great war.

yep, this is the war where it took a long time to figure out that blindly charging machine gun trench-nests is not a very strong military strategy.
