Nigerians have often tended to separate themselves from the experiences of African Americans in this country. I will not necessarily say that this is a wrong headed way to think since they are mostly immune from said experiences. The perception among blacks is that they (Nigerians) believe themselves to be superior to African Americans and as such immune to the racism which effect African Americans once they arrive in this country.

This is not necessarily a one way street either. Many blacks in this country (regardless of situation or standing) consider themselves superior to Nigerians as well.

Strictly speaking from the perspective of a black person i will say that there is a disconnect between the two groups. I think much of the disconnect can be traced to the cultural differences as well as the experiences endured by the two groups.

Nigerians can be very entitled, but from my experience Africans look down on African Americans for whatever reason.

You see it (Cultural differences)manifested a lot now with the music thats being play at a lot of house parties these days. They feel that they have to make a distinction between house music and "Afro beats" on the promos all of a sudden.

I think (without conducting a study of course) the reason is due to an intrinsic belief by Africans that blacks were too accepting and acquiescent with regards to racism and discrimination.

A lot of those are popping up these days. In the latter years of House (before its Renaissance about 10 years ago) they'd sprinkle some of it into the party. Now they have parties where it is wall to wall. They also advertise so that people will know that it is the music that will be played.

I think it's simply a case of tribalism. From my personal experience there are some cultural differences, but most are somewhat minor. Nigerians are highly suspicious of our intentions. However, once they let you in, you're family for life.

I'd like to ask how could the cultural differences be "minor." To be clear, I am imagining a fresh immigrant or visiting African, not someone who resides here but immigrated some time ago. Aside from race, what binds visiting/immigrant Africans and African Americans together? From LTG and RR's thoughts here, it seems like not much. Sociologically, this makes sense. Growing up/living in sub-Saharan Africa vs growing up in the U.S. - in whatever socioeconomic bracket you find yourself in - could not be any more different. Different set of experiences, different culture, language (mostly), cuisine, expectations, etc. That's obvious of course. So, Nas, I'd be interested in hearing more because it seems like in your experience you've found some commonalities whereas difference seemed to be the theme of RR and LTG's posts.

I'd be remiss if i didn't add this. Nigerian immigrants also take the traditional course that many newly arriving immigrants have taken historically with respect to class.

Newly arriving Immigrants tend to distance themselves from whomever they consider the most shunned/disadvantaged group to be. Historically that has been African Americans in this country.

I've seen this as well, and not just with African immigrants. This also jibes with how Adichie originally thought when she first arrived in the U.S. ("I'm not black, I'm Nigerian.")

I said mostly minor because I believe that you would find similar differences with most groups of people regardless of when they immigrated here. I also strongly believe that once you get past the surface most of us have far more in common than not.

I'm not sure about the governmental structure of Nigeria but there are a lot of different kings from various tribal factions.

A friend of mine's kid attended an elite prep school. I asked him how many kings he went to school with. He said, "They're too young to be kings. They're princes."

One of this kid's friends who he played on the football team with was an actual Nigerian prince. The prince told him that people in his family get assassinated all the time.

One time when the kid was fucking up in school, his mom told him, "Maybe if you flunk out one of your rich friends will give you a job. Maybe you can be a food taster for the prince."

At some of these polish events I see people strutting around claiming titles and wearing ribbons. It's ridiculous when you think that Poland hasn't been its own country for the better part of three centuries and even when it had kings, titles weren't passed to children like in other countries. Even if you do have a title, you look like a chump if you don't have an estate and fortune.

I always told the kids there was a Castle Dolphin that was stolen from us by the Nazis and Communists. It was a little embarrassing when my kid told his class about it.
